The design for the mass-produced RAYS that were built to guard Arsenal Gear differed from the original Marines' RAY that was built to hunt down REX derivatives (most notably, they don't have a tail). Given the different roles they were meant to play, I'd say it's entirely reasonable that the mass-produced version would have more trouble with a REX. Apparently, the novelization of MGS4 (which, btw, wat) heavily implies that Ocelot's RAY was a modified Arsenal Gear/Outer Heaven one which would help explain why it was defeated by REX. It's also worth pointing out that RAY was designed to hunt down Metal Gear derivatives, presumably made mostly by crackpot terrorist cells and dictators who'd cobble together what they could. I also don't think it was ever tested out against them, so it's possible it would have just failed terribly. It differs from the mass produced ones inside Arsenal in that it is manually piloted (even the ones in Rising are AI), has a tail and has different headlights (or eyes). Though they might eventually later say it wasn't the original if they ever make more sequels, as it is, there's no reason to believe so. As for Rex vs Ray, probably Ray. DevsBro 05/16/17 9:05:16 PM #36:	Like I said, there is a novelization of MGS4 which implies it's just an Arsenal Gear one that Ocelot modified. That's hilariously dumb for so many reasons but I suppose canon is canon. I dunno how Ocelot was supposed to engineer a tail for the thing or where he would get the resources to build it, never mind why, or why he bothered to change the eye(s) and add a cockpit apparently just so that he could trick Snake into thinking he was fighting a stronger machine when he presumably could have just gone and gotten said stronger machine out of his garage. I also find it amusing that Rex's weapons deal less damage to this Arsenal Ray than Raiden's grenade launcher did to the same model, and that the fight was presented as if it isn't anticlimactic after Raiden defeated 20 or so of these things (depending on your difficulty level) on foot in 2 and yet here we are fighting one in a giant death machine. Sounds to me like the writer of your novelization wanted a feasible reason Rex could beat Ray, which is a Rex killer and decided opening all those cans of worms was better than just saying Snake had good willpower or something.
