MICROSOFT’S Xbox One X is a few months away — but will it be worth the wait?

With more power than ever before, the supercharged Xbox promises better graphics, faster load times and an all-round superior experience to the standard Xbox One.

Here’s why you should seriously consider upgrading to Microsoft’s new console.

FIFA 18 and PES 2018 in true 4K

The X may look similar to the standard Xbox One S, but that’s all it has in common. Under the bonnet is a completely different beast altogether.

It’s powered by a six teraflop graphics processor running at 1172 Mhz, has 12GB of GDDR5 memory and a 2.3 Ghz custom central processing unit.

This makes it significantly more powerful than the Xbox One S and, crucially, Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro, which boasts a 4.2 teraflop graphics processing unit and a 911 Mhz CPU.

The result is that the X can run games at native 4K resolution along with HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound.

FIFA 18, released on September 29, will be one of the first games to see a bump in performance.

The Xbox logo was emblazoned on nearly all of EA’s FIFA 18 marketing materials, which suggests it could feature the ‘Enhanced for One X’ tag. So, expect smoother gameplay and crisper visuals, especially at 4K.

The same goes for PES 2018, with Fox Engine capable of scaling up in line with more powerful hardware.

Perfect timing

Not that football games are the only reason to get excited about the X.

The console hits shelves on November 7, which puts it right at the epicentre of a plethora of game launches.

Need for Speed: Payback, Star Wars Battlefront II, Assassins Creed Origins, Crackdown — there’s simply too many to choose from and all will look substantially better on the X than PS4 Pro.

Small but mighty

The X is much better looking than the chunky PS4 Pro — and is far less invasive.

The PS4 Pro’s dimensions are 12.8 x 11.6 x 2.1 inches and the X’s dimensions are 11.8 x 9.4 x 2.4 inches.

True Blu

One of the most damaging omissions from the PS4 Pro is a 4K Blu-ray player — especially given how many people use consoles as an entertainment hub.

Thankfully, the X includes a 4K Blu-ray drive. Plus, it’ll be backwards compatible with original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.

Sounds like a winner to us.

AMD Freesync

AMD FreeSync makes gameplay smoother by delivering dynamic refresh rates.

It works by synchronising the refresh rate of a compatible display to the frame rate of the GPU to cut input lag and juddering during gameplay.

This feature was totally bypassed by the PS4 Pro, so the X will be the only console around offering it.

The Xbox One X will be out worldwide on November 7.

The only thing that points towards the title of this thread being true, is the backwards compatability. It's following in the footsteps of the PS2, and that's a hell of a pitch. You can play the entirety of a company's console releases on one platform - that's great.

The factor that decides the One X's fate, though, will be if the new games are any fun to play. It needs more than "this year's instalment of FIFA looks really good". It looks better than the Playstation offering, and performance-wise it'll beat the Switch by far, but if its original offering bombs - that's One X exclusives and One games - and there's nothing exciting to offer for the price tag outside of a tangential tech upgrade to 4K movies, its potential will be squandered.

I think it'll be pretty good, and it's a complete turnaround from the One's launch where they tried to fuck everyone with always-online and Kinect requirements. But let's wait for it to come out and prove its potential.

So basically it's only selling point is graphics which if you actually care about graphics you wouldn't be a console gamer, you'd be a PC gamer. And if you were a truly competitive gamer you'd play on PC as well.
And lol at mentioning free sync as if people typically connect their console to a monitor, let alone but a new monitor for their console.

The only cool thing about it honestly, as a collector of movies and someone who plans to have a home theater soon, is the 4k Blu-ray player but that's on the S model too so idgaf.

It'll undeniably be "the best" if by "the best" you mean "the most powerful" but the fact that it has no exclusives and is still going to be held back by the PS4 Pro as far as actual game and engine stuff go, so all you're getting is extra resolution that most people don't even have a display for yet and a better framerates on a 1080p TV. Which it's not like console gamers have really been show to give much of a fuck about framerate and shit otherwise nobody would've bought either current gen console if they actually cared.

And assuming the CPU is still Jaguar based (I'm not sure if it is but I'm assuming) it doesn't matter how much they try to raise the clock speed or anything, it's still a garbage mobile platform that's severely underpowered. A $60 Pentium G4560 with 2 cores and hyperthreading completely blows it out of the water which holds things back a lot as far as engine physics, density, AI, etc. Go so games on a technical level are still going to be held back a lot by the shit CPU, but it'll just be able to make the same games just look better.
There won't be a big generational leap until the next gen consoles come out which will presumably be running on custom second gen Ryzen APU's which will be a major leap forward in a lot of ways in terms of what games are capable of. The One X isn't going to really make games be capable of more than just more pixels and higher framerates which is nice and all but considering it has no games and the PC is a superior and cheaper long term platform it doesn't really have any reason to exist.

But One X is a particular kind of stupid. You already have your core audience, I can't believe there is any way they are making money on this by selling their idiot fanboys a third system at this point. There's no way they are selling One X's at cost, let alone making a profit, right?

That isn't even getting into how fucking stupid it is for Sony and Microsoft both to focus on 4k before 60fps.

I've quit gaming for the most part but honestly the PS4 has no exclusives I'm interested in I've always mainly played muliplat games and the new Xbox looks promising for 4k gaming.

I'm not sure if you used "overpriced" but meant to say "more expensive than" but you can say what you will about the One X but it's not overpriced, they've already said they're selling at cost I think, either that or for a slight loss.
It's actually a good deal as far as the hardware and performance you're getting, but when you factor in things like the cost of XBL over the lifetime to play online and the fact that games have better sales and stuff on PC, along with the benefits that come along with owning a PC such as mods as well as things that aren't necessarily related to gaming but still beneficial/useful.

How? It'll actually have games and actual support by the company who made it, unlike the Vita. It's still entirely compatible with older One games and pretty much all future AAA titles will have some 4k version.
I really can't see it flopping as hard as the Vita let alone getting abandoned by the company who created it like it was.

It's still an Xbox One, similar to the PS4 Pro just actually powerful enough for native 4k @ 30fps and not some in between resolution. And 4k @ 60fps on select titles like Forza.

I imagine we won't get next gen until about 2020.
