Either that or the whole "examine anything and everything a certain number of times to progress the plot" isn't my forte.

If I'm following a guide, is that really experiencing the game?

I played it like two times for an hour and then never touched it again. I really should play Tales of Symphonia though... O__O That's been on the back burner for a year now on Steam.

Baiting? The fuck do I have to gain by doing that? If I actually wanted to do that, I would've just said "this game isn't that great", and left it at that.

A lot of old games were designed to be unplayable without a guide, though I can't remember if Chrono Trigger falls under that. I remember using a guide for the side quests, because fuck em, I can't remember if I used one for the main plot at all.

Chrono Trigger can be a little hard on knowing what exactly you should be doing (or which time period you should be going to next). Earthbound is similar, minus the time travel.

If you're stuck, just find a guide to see where to go next. No ones gonna judge you.

It's kinda difficult to play as an adult. As a kid, you blindly play through games and which direction you go doesn't matter. The divining rod leads you to different paths.

Video games these days are so "one direction". Back in the day it was more like "no direction" and just have fun with what you got.

Are you talking about the Millennial Fair at the beginning? Because that's the only spot I can think of that makes you hit specific parts.

Other than that, the important items and switches are literally flashing on screen, you can't miss them

The games were short so they expected you to try a bit, but all the hints for everything were there. Since guides were not widely available (aside in paper forms, and for kids they were expensive), we just made due. Talked to people in real life, bang our heads a bit, and figured it out.

The only thing that wasn't that obvious was the green dream quest, and even that was a lot of "wink wink hint hint".

Thats the biggest thing: nothing in those games was that no space was wasted. If there's something, its used for something. If someone says something, its about a quest. Made things a lot easier.

Uh... what?

There's only one "desert" in Chrono Trigger that I can think of, and it's in a sidequest at the very end of the game.

seeing as how he used the word barren, he's probably talking about the wasteland future

which is the first place you go to, i think, at the start of the game.

Third/fourth, depending on how you count it. You start in 1000 AD, go back to 600 AD for the Marle/Leene quest, back to 1000 AD for the trial, then to 2300 AD.

And I dunno, that place doesn't scream "desert" to me.
