I've been planning to do a challenge run in Skyrim for my channel for a while now and will probably start it in the next couple of weeks, but I need help figuring out which version to get.

Originally, I was going to do the 360 version, because it had the voice commands for shouts, which I thought would be funny, but then they announced the Special Edition, so I waited for that, but that doesn't have the voice commands. I was hoping that someone would mod voice commands into the Special Edition version by now, but that doesn't seem to have happened yet.

I can see that there is a voice commands mod for vanilla Skyrim though, so my question is, if I get all the recommended improvement mods for vanilla Skyrim, how different is it to the Special Edition with mods? And is the difference significant enough that it's worth just getting the Special Edition and losing out on the voice commands? Also how easy are mods to install on vanilla Skyrim as well?

The Special Edition on PC is no different from the original, AFAIK, it just has the HD texture packs and expansions packaged into it.

Installing mods into it is super simple, but yeah, obviously not as simple as the integrated mods for the Special Edition.

A bunch of mods that work with normal Skyrim don't work with the special edition and likely never will (because the modders have moved on to other things).

Mods are super easy to install. You either go through the Steam workshop (in which case Steam takes care of everything for you) or you get a mod manager, download your stuff through Nexus, and the mod manager takes care of everything for you.

What about the Special Edition being 64bit? Does that matter much?

I have both versions (original and SE) because they gave away SE for free for owners of the legendary edition on PC, PS4, and Xbone I believe.

My original is heavily modded to the point it barely looks like the actual game anymore. My textures are way higher than the ones included in SE, some of them which greatly tax my machine to the point I have to turn to mid settings. (I run on a 1080 and a Ryzen 1700x). So depending on your machine might depend on where you want to go.

There is a large number of mods only available for the base game but I don't quite have that list. Just know that you make your game look better than SE if you have the machine for it. Usually with an ENB and some texture packs. I'd search around on nexus for mods to get. There are texture packs for environment, characters, effects, nature, etc.

Also download really useful dragons.

Yes, it increases your vram headroom (something you could do with a mod though).

Fair enough, so sounds like getting the Legendary Edition and then modding the balls off of it is the way to go then. Thanks muchly for the advice!
