You know speaking as someone who loves Backwards compatibility and still uses their PS2, Honestly I don't think many gamers care.

The PS3 originally played PS2 games remember? And no one cares so Sony scrapped the feature.

I mean it adds up. If people really wanted to keep playing their older games forever. They would be PC gamers.

The sheer fact they spend a fortune buying brand new consoles and games every few years routinely shows that they like to move on. Especially now multiplayer is so huge.

Sure we the berks who post on Gamefaqs care about old games, but average Joe? He's already forgotten about The Division and you think he remembers Genji: Days of the Blade?

People on mass really don't care about the past. Only "comming soon" that's why esstentially the same game sold again and again with token differences sells so damn well.

It's my biggest issue with the system (more that PS2 Classic support is poor and that my PS1/PS2 classic purchases from PS3 haven't carried over) but sadly most people do not seem to care.

Yup. If you care about games in general, you don't own an XB1. You own a PC.

PS4 has enough exclusives worth playing to make it worth an extra purchase beyond the PC, just like the Switch will.

XB1 is basically pointless.

besides esoteric japanese games, what exclusives does the Ps4 really have to make it worth it over the xbox? uncharted?

Horizon: Zero Dawn
Until Dawn
Ratchet and Clank
Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy

I'll never understand excluding Japanese games though. A lot of them are really great. Not to mention Sony is a Japanese company.

Persona 5, Spider-Man, Bloodborne, God of War 4, Infamous Second Son, MLB The Show (only good MLB games anymore), Uncharted, Until Dawn... yup, PS4 doing terrible in terms of exclusives.

People cared. It's not why they dropped the feature: it was merely prohibitively expensive.

PS2 was the most successful console of all time. Sony was living on a high, very confident in their position of power. And they came up with a strategy to straight up demolish the competition and become the reigning game champs forever:

The PS3's architecture made it incredibly powerful and very different to program for than any other system. That way it would disincentivize people from making games for multiple platforms: game development is expensive, and making a game for the PS3 AND 360 was more work than making a game for PS2 and Xbox. This way developers would only make games for the PS3 and Microsoft and whatever crazy shit Nintendo did would die out without by third party support.

That's obviously not what happened, the PS3 was super expensive, which lead to low initial sales, which lead to third party support dropping from PS3 since it was cheaper to make games just for the 360 than just for the PS3...

That architecture is also what makes it impossible for backwards capability. The PS4 flat out can't run PS3 games because it's architecture is, for lack of a better term, "normal".

When the PS3 came out, the backwards compatible version essentially had an entire second system built inside of it. Basically it had a PS2 built inside its case to run PS2 and PSX games. Hence the ridiculous cost.

I cared enough that I snapped up a ps1/2/3 80gb at the time, and managed to track down a refurbished 60gb a couple years ago. I haven't bought a ps4 yet precisely because of the lack of backwards compatibility. Obviously I've got no effect on the success of the ps4 but there are some of us out there that value it highly.

I get that they can't support PS3 but the lack of PS1/PS2 titles is an extreme disappointment and feels pretty lazy. I'm pretty sure the PS4 is the first PlayStation ever that lacks the ability to play PS1 games.

Crash Bandicoot isnt exclusive

Remember when you shilled for Rise of the Tomb Raider and cried that it was an exclusive even though it was announced as timed from the start and then it flopped on Xbox and didn't make it's money back until PC and PS4? Lol.

Anyways as nice as backwards compatible would be it would be physically impossible without literally including a PS3 inside of it which would've jacked the price up unreasonably when it's smarter to just keep them separate.
If people want a PS3, let them buy a PS3. You know like how nobody wanted a Kinect with their Xbox but they wanted to push it, then they lost big time on getting an early lead because they charged $100 more for a weaker console?

I value it highly as well, but I accept the impossibility. Sony really shot themselves in the foot with that insane PS3 architecture...

But it's also arguably what led to them being able to catch up to the 360 later in the gen, being able to make games like Uncharted and The Last of Us that was graphically stunning and blew away anything on the 360 probably convinced a lot of people to go with a PS3.
However you could also argue if they hadn't gone for that architecture and such an expensive high performance CPU in general that it would've had a lower price tag and possibly sold better to begin with but more so than the CPU, the Blu-ray drive and pretty much including a PS2 inside undeniably made up a lot of that price tag as well so it still would've been more expensive than a 360.
