Is there anything I should know going in? The only thing I remember from my abortive first attempt was that stamina takes forever to recover.

None so far. Are there any must-haves? And if so, how do you install them to the Steam version?

Use the fast travel cheat. Trust me. The game holds up pretty well otherwise.

What's this cheat and what's it do?

There is a cheat you can use where you can travel to any location instantly. I think you type COC and the name of the city or location. Sorry, my memory is a little foggy.

Abusing it in the wrong way can break the game because you can literally travel to the ends of the world in an instant with this cheat. I only used it as a measure to counter the no fast travel option and the other trasportation method being riding a shoopuff like creature which you can't find everywhere.

Strongly disagree with this. A large part of the charm of Morrowind lies in trying to find quest destinations via dodgy NPC directions, getting lost, stumbling into a cave you didn't even intend to find, and ending up on an adventure completely accidentally. You miss out on all of that if you just warp everywhere, and it's really not the way the game is meant to be played.

At the very least, make sure you have both expansions installed and then get the latest version of the unofficial patch, the Morrowind Code Patch, and a mod to delay the Dark Brotherhood attack. Everything beyond that is optional, but those three mods will make the game much more stable, much better-performing, and significantly more balanced (especially the third one, which prevents you from potentially getting late-game armor right from the start).
