While her Dad's money did help with her career Big Machine Records was a no-name label she went with to have total control over her career. IIRC Sony was willing to sign her but only on their terms.

I wouldn't call that getting your career handed to you on a silver platter. She took the harder road with more risk and it paid off.

It's very unlikely that she would have been successful if she stayed a country artist. These controversies over the years definitely made a pop image easily marketable.
