There probably is something to that. Not a direct correlation, but almost certainly something.

Intelligent people understand that they have reason to doubt themselves, and they're more inwardly involved so they tend not to notice the immediate world around them.

They also tend to over-analyze things, which is a negative in situations that require feeling and finesse like being social.

Trump isn't socially awkward. He's more oblivious due to his arrogance.

He said "if she weren't my daughter we'd be dating" on a talk show with his daughter right next to him. That's top tier social awkwardness.

If the person himself doesn't feel socially awkward saying weird crap and isn't shunned for it is he socially awkward though?

Like we all have a racist weird Uncle who says crap that makes everyone else awkward but is he socially awkward? Generally these people don't feel awkward at all. That's why they blatantly say the crap they do.

Most stories that other celebrities tell about Trump tend to portray him as the weird Uncle, where they tolerate him but make fun of him behind his back.

Uhh, you don't have to personally feel awkward to be socially awkward. I don't know where you got that requirement from...

That's pretty much how I've always seen people talk about it. Socially awkward people are people who are anxious about social interactions and constantly feel awkward in social situations because of it.

People who are confident don't care about what other people think so they're generally not socially awkward. Trump doesn't have any issues talking to people clearly. He just constantly puts his foot in his mouth.

No you're confusing social awkwardness and social anxiety.

Awkwardness is just often an accompanying symptom.

I would, for example, describe the kid when I was in high school who would spout Chuck Norris jokes in class and say "desu" all of the time as being socially awkward, even if he didn't seem to think he was being awkward.

The difference to me is that this kid gets shunned for it (and lets be real kids like this generally have social disorders too). People like Trump do not.

I mean I would describe Trump as confident but it doesn't feel right to call those kids confident.
