Yes, but they weren't a secret society, nor did they wear black robes, nor were they trained in mystical, supernatural arts. They spent the majority of their time doing standard espionage things like eavesdropping and snooping. When they did kill, it was generally attacks of opportunity. Even more important to remember, ninja wasn't a mutually exclusive occupation. Samurai could be ninja, so could pretty much anyone.

I'd say they are pretty damn secret since they never recorded anything for centuries until they ended up coming up with a total of three or four books that still give little insight to how they really operated. They also were completely clad in dark clothing but it was navy blue instead of black and they wore masks as well because at that time in Japan many people wore masks if they were trying to be unidentified. It was completely normal for example if you were going to a brothel so they weren't really ninja masks but they definitely were in style at the time to begin with

It's corrupt but not even close to the level of stoning people for adultery and execution for being gay.

But my point is that China gets away with a lot of shit that other countries we don't have favorable trade deals with would not

I'd like to see the source on that. I know that they promoted this image because it made it easier to operate and the robes thing came from traditional theater, where extras would wear dark robes to move around the stage and sometimes were used for surprise 'assassinations' of the characters.

Historically, though, pretty much everyone knew which families had particularly well trained assassins and spies. I don't believe for a minute that they wore dark robes and ran around killing everyone for no reason. At the end of the day, they were paid killers who could only get paid if they got away, which is much easier to accomplish if you blend in with the people that are actually supposed to be on the property (like gardeners or servants).

I do remember something about them being trained to kill with common tools, though. It wouldn't make much sense for a guy to walk around with a fucking three foot sword and try and be sneaky. The sai, for example, is said to originate from an Okinawan rice soil tilling tool (though the sai is predominately a non-lethal weapon).
