It is largely what I expected it to be, which begs the question why I spent the 5-10 hours watching it. I mean, the games, in my opinion, might have required the highest suspicion of disbelief in any work of fiction that I've experienced, but I think this animation easily one-upped them.

Despair Arc > Future Arc by a mile. Future Arc went off the rails in like the third episode. It isn't that the situation made the vast majority of the characters unlikable, but they were wholly unlikable from the start. It also bothered me, possibly more than it should have, that nearly everyone had a role among the highest leadership positions in the Future Foundation while maybe five of them had actual leadership qualities. That must be one pathetic organization if the likes of Ruruka, Ryota, and Juzo among the 15 most powerful people in it.

The 7th episode (I think that had the mutual killing game) might have been the most disturbing in animation that I have seen since like Ren & Stimpy. Thinking about it still gives me chills. Most of it was ludicrous, but it didn't make it any less distressing.

As someone who didn't like DR3 and doesn't especially like Junko, Junko is awesome in DR3. That episode you mentioned is one of the best because it's ridiculous, weird, and kind of upsetting, which is the kind of surrealist bizarreness that DR is at its best doing. Future Arc is basically just a bog-standard shonen anime about people with crazy powers fighting, it's awful.

The first episode of Future Arc actually gave me hope that it could turn out good, but goddamn did they squash it swiftly.

Yeah the first episode or two of future arc was like, oh shit this will be cool - but then it got stupid

I really like the 'forbidden action' thing but it's squandered badly, they should have used it to create some cool mysteries. "Why did the murderer do x when it doesn't make any sense? it must be because of their forbidden action!" etc etc. But nah.

I'm not too down on Future Arc as some people. I thought it was alright for the most part. Though, admittedly, knowing all the answers of Future Arc make rewatching it really dumb.

The forbidden action thing was neat. I remember liking the episode where they're trying to figure out why and how the blacksmith died with Kyouko.

I too liked the concept of the forbidden action handicap, but they were wildly uneven. If they were all basic things such as no running in the halls or can't open left hand, I thought they could take them in interesting directions. However, there were a lot of stupidly specific ones that took all the fascination out of it. Makoto lives past the fourth time limit? Anyone leaves the playing field? Kyosuke dies? Those were just stupid and ultimately contributed to the forbidden actions feeling like a hollow inclusion.

Did I like him more as the series went on? Yes

Was he in the Top 3 new characters? He might be by default. Most were garbage and/or underdeveloped. After Chisa and Koichi, who else has a chance? Tengan was whatever and Gozu died too soon to flesh him out.

Chisa and Jozu were the only good new characters imo

Koichi could have been cool but not developed enough

I think the biggest problem with Future was that it introduced too many new characters. There wasn't really time to care about any of them.

I mean, at the core level yes. Plot wise I have no idea, I've a avoided that like the plague (I fully expect the claim of no connection to the previous games to be total bullshit). A lot of interesting additions to the trial mechanics, a bunch of new trial games, and a looooooooooooot more bonus content and modes than previous entries. Even basic quality of life things like walking speed and cursor control are much improved, likely as a result of PS4 being the lead platform (PS4 versions of DR 1 and 2 do not have these changes).

I played the demo, and I've yet to see the additions to the trial mechanics being "interesting", but I suppose that may change in the actual game. Being able to lie about stuff has the potential to be great, but if it's not executed well, then I could definitely foresee myself reeeeeally hating that mechanic.

Yes, Lie Bullets are now a thing. Basically you slip lies in to trick people into telling the truth by making them think they're found out, or similar situations.
