I dunno, at least in Sweden it seems like the thai massage parlors all offer some handy service if you're in a big city. Well, that is if you believe the Swedish kind of equivalent to 4chan, which has a giant, ancient thread about it. I don't know why it would be different in other parts of the western world, but I have no personal experience so I can't really say for sure.

it is. iirc in sweden prostitutes are not prosecuted, only their johns/pimps, right? this is designed to make it easier for victimized girls to come forward, but it also means that escorts have less to fear from getting caught practicing their trade.

in the US, prostitution is criminalized for the seller as well, so there's some incentive to take the 'bad customer service' hit if there's a perceived risk of arrest

Yeah, selling is not illegal, only buying. Although sex workers argue that this isn't so good either - they still don't want to get caught because it essentially ruins their careers. So they have to stick to dangerous underground environments and so on. That's a big reason why Amnesty International (IIRC it was them) updated their stance on prostitution to "it should be completely legal".

this is really interesting. i had thought the associated impact on human trafficking rates was seen as offsetting this.

it really should be possible for sale of sex to operate without harming those involved. but it seems like there is no really good system for it.

Well it's by no means a clear cut issue. The argument that legalization brings it into the open and makes it safer etc sounds nice, but AFAIK if you look at Germany, Netherlands and other countries were sex work is legal, there seems to be no less trafficking or more safety for sex workers. And the profession is still so stigmatized that the issues largely remain the same.
So then the question is this: Is there a way to address this stigma? Is Germany just not doing enough? Is it worth it in the first place? It's a horribly complex issue that seems in many ways stuck in a deadlock. You'll have feminists arguing against legalization on the basis that it doesn't help - which may very well be the case. You'll have liberals arguing for legalization on the basis that it just hasn't been done enough (or fully enough) yet - which may also be true. Either way I think it's gonna be a really long time before things start to change in a meaningful way, and it has to go hand in hand with the status of sex worker changing in some way.
For around a decade or three Sweden has been actively trying to change the view of a sex worker from "criminal" to "victim". But IDK if that's right (it definitely isn't if you ask sex workers themselves, the ones that can formulate opinions anyway), and IDK if it's working.
