Cloverfield was alright, 10 Cloverfield Lane was one of my favorite movies of 2016. Just based on what a surprise that movie was, I feel like I might not watch the trailer for this and just go in blind again. Very excited, though!

I think it's kinda cool, honestly, but it may just be the novelty. like 'hey this thing is coming out... right now.' without any hype or build up, or needing to wait for months. you can just go and watch it pretty much right away if you want. I can't think of any other examples of things like this. at least not any things I was interested in.

In fairness, the ARG stuff aside, 10 Cloverfield Lane also largely came out of nowhere and it was excellent. Like, wasn't it only officially announced two months before it hit theaters? That's kind of bananas for a movie.

My only concern is that up until, well, now, this was a movie that was going to be theatrically released. Don't get me wrong; I'd love for Netflix to finally start adding good movies to their repertoire. I just wonder if someone higher up said that they would rather not risk the release of this in theaters.

Aside from Beasts of No Nation which, while well-made, I didn't enjoy watching, I can't think of another good movie they've produced. At least something that rises to the level of studio quality of the quality of their TV shows.

Can somebody who watched it please confirm if it's ACTUALLY related or if it's just the Netflix marketing team trying to sell it to a wide audience?

I originally thought that Cloverfield was being treated as an anthology with only loose connections between the films. They just finished filming the 4th one and I think it's a war movie so it's another completely different setting and tone and maybe time period.

But that was when Paramount was in charge of the IP, and they sold it to Netflix fairly recently including the finished Cloverfield Paradox, which iirc was originally a different movie that was re-tooled called God Particle. Now with the Super Bowl spot I'm really confused as to where this movie falls in the universe and what direction it's going in.

The first Cloverfield is very enjoyable and was a great new perspective on what had felt like a played-out subgenre for a long time. The second Cloverfield was a well-crafted tense narrative. They are both great in their own unique ways.

Paramount sold distribution rights for this movie. All Cloverfield movies are developed like this movie - interesting and fitting spec scripts are bought, produced as is, then after test screenings they Cloverfield it up.

The way they try to tack on Cloverfield 1 monsters is sooo bad

There was already a perfectly fine lore that they just completely muddled with a retcon that almost cant fit the first movie. As a huge fan of the first film, I disapprove

Earth bullshit aside, the space stuff was fine. Not release this in a theater fine but its worth a watch for a few cool scenes.

Definitely feel like a Netflix release on this one was a good move. I liked it more than Cloverfield but nowhere near as much as 10 Cloverfield Lane. Might've been a bit disappointed seeing it in theaters but as something I just saw for free I thought it was a nice watch. Really I just love the idea of this universe and I'm happy to see more of it.

I guess we're getting a proper theatrical Cloverfield as well at the end of the year... and that one's a WW2 movie? >_> I guess if anything this movie establishes that weird shit can happen basically anywhere at any time, so they can really make any kind of story they want in this universe now.

The way they flew over central park to leave manhattan island. I can forgive some stupidity in horror films, but come the fuck on, they were following the path of the monster instead of flying directly to the edge of the island.

Seems quite plausible to me!

In the footage at the end of the original Cloverfield, you see something fall from the sky in to the water. Given what we saw in this movie, it seems like what fell was the Shepherd, right? Which would place Cloverfield 1 in an alternate dimension from Paradox's point of view.
