to be fair, in all major sports(hockey, basketball, gridiron football and baseball), no other countries league comes close in terms of talent.
Maybe hockey with the KHL? i dont know. I mean, I wouldnt throw around the world champion title unless you had a tournament where you beat other teams from other countries(similar to the uefa champions league or world cup), but a team from the US league would likely win every time. edit: perhaps a canadian team could win in hockey or sneak one out in baseball or basketball but still mainly american leagues ... Check your history, NHL only had four teams when it started in 1917, all Canadian. They expanded in 1924 to include Boston. Between 1942 and 1967, they had the Original Six teams. NHL was already 25 years old by 1942. --- GameFAQs isn't going to be merged in with GameSpot or any other site. We're not going to strip out the soul of the site. -CJayC ... Copied to Clipboard!

So it was. Even so, that doesn't negate the fact that it IS (present tense) an international league. Why the NHL was even brought up makes me curious since I don't ever recall them calling the Stanley Cup champions "World Champions". I could see it with the MLB.

As a sidenote, the four first Canadian teams were Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Hockey Club, Ottawa Senators and Montreal Wanderers.

Friends and I briefly talked about this last time. We thought it sounded odd as well. Hell, in the baseball World Series, to my understanding it is just U.S. teams despite other countries having baseball teams. Would be neat to have an actual international competition though.

I would like that too but I feel like itll never happen, or if it does, it would be a secondary thing like the world baseball classic.
its interesting how soccer as the UEFA champions league which is considered the premier tournament(in some cases i think matters more than winning the domestic league) but that can sustain itself because top quality teams come from several leagues and not just one. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Foppe posted... NFL actually had a World League of American Football at the start of the 90s with 7 North American and 3 European teams. London dominated Barcelona in the first final. The second year had two American teams in the finals. After that, NFL suspended the league. 3 years later the European part started over with a couple of more teams and renamed it to NFL Europe Leage, and kept it going for 12 years until 2007. That said, we also got International Federation of American Football, or IFAF, which got over 100 member countries and hosts the IFAF World Championship every fourth year. I think USA won the last three championships or so. That said, it exist many more rugby leagues than American Football leagues outside NA. --- GameFAQs isn't going to be merged in with GameSpot or any other site.
