Capcom has laid off a significant number of staff in its Vancouver office as part of a shift that saw the company cancel an unannounced project and cut scope on the next Dead Rising, according to a person familiar with the company as well as various posts on social media.

The source, who spoke anonymously so as not to risk their career, said around 50 people were laid off as part of a reorganization aimed to streamline the company and wrangle the next Dead Rising, which had been over-scoped and under-staffed (as many video games are).

Per Linkedin, Capcom Vancouver had around 250 employees. The studio is best known for developing the second, third, and fourth games in Capcom's humorous zombie-killing series.

The unannounced game, which was a very early prototype and had not yet been greenlit, was envisioned as a third-person action-adventure game set in an alternate reality version of New York, the source said.

Capcom Vancouver also works on mobile games including last year's Puzzle Fighter and other unannounced projects.

Capcom did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I'm surprised they're even making a new Dead Rising. Maybe a limited scope will be a good thing but the more likely scenario is that it'll be another stinker.

Honestly I think Case West tied the first two games pretty well together. Then DR3 just had to do some 15 years in the future!!! thing, but the twist was still not bad. DR4 is bad fanfiction

I hope smaller scale means it isn't a city or large town in the next game.

Bring back those extremely interactive smaller sandboxes. Something like a cruise ship or a theme park resort would be great.

Yeah it sucks. It can overall be ignored but I don't think they need to overly worry about retconning it specifically.

Dead Rising 4 was a fucking disgrace so good.

Dead Rising 2 is one of my all time favorite games. Faaaaaaantastic!
Dead Rising 3 is a decent game. Kinda a step back, but fun.
I never played it but Dead Rising 4 was a total shit bomb. Please just go back to 2's gameplay.

They don't understand what made Frank West charming at all. They think he's some Ash Williams rip off. I don't think they even played the first game going by their comments. Whenever they talk about DR1 it's often completely wrong or they talk about how it wasn't fun.

In its current form it most certainly does.

If they want to ditch the time limit they need to completely revamp the game. The combat system isn't designed to be challenging. The zombies are more like an obstacle to slow you down than an actual threat to your life. But they haven't done this. Probably because they don't know what to replace it with outside of "Look at this cool and over the top weapon guys!"

I miss that regular absurdity of the original. Can't even throw pies anymore...

If I want a good zombie survival game, I will play State of Decay. Without the time limit it feels like an average game. Include a sandbox mode, but keep the time on the normal story.

Because people are bad and fuck around all day. Also it makes it one of the few games that is physically impossible to speedrun lmaoThere was still plenty of time to fuck around in Dead Rising 2 if you were efficient in doing missions. But people just want to kill zombies.

It's especially annoying because any potential complaints about the time limit can easily be fixed to be more accessible. Sandbox mode for example. Or letting you restart from an earlier case or time instead of the very start.

But nah. People would rather whine about how it's hard and they don't want to play it more than once until it's changed and they don't buy the game anyway.

I remember when they first announced DR4 and said it was gonna have Frank West returning to Willamette and I was like awesome. This sounds good, Frank West and Willamette are the best protag/location in the series imo.

Then they just made a dumbed down game with a new protagonist whose name is just Frank West and a new location that's just named Willamette. Neither were like or as good as the original.

How can you market the game so hard on "Frank is back!" and then screw it up in every way possible?

Also for me, Dead Rising was never about killing hordes of zombies with huge weapons, but that's the main aspect they've seem to have focused on since the 2nd game.

They should have stopped making DR games after 2

Alright I want a fucking answer to this parroted bullshit; how can someone tell if a game is "simple" enough for them without playing it? Dumbing down is a myth because of that massive gaping hole in logic. Know why they dumb it down? So their idiot developers can squeeze more game out of no budget.
