because I haven't quite had the talk with my parents yet and anecdotes from strangers might help make that conversation marginally easier.

Did your family have issues with it?

What experiences have you had in public based on the fact?

Anything else to share?

I had a short lasted one. Parents seemed fine with it, more or less. Dad has a tendency to say racist things at times, but thankfully he only really says it when no one else is around. So overall no real issue there.

As for public experiences, no issues there either. She claimed people stared at times, but I never noticed it. She was always a bit paranoid though(which is one reason the relationship didn't last but that's unrelated).

Honesty it's 2018. What other people think of your relationship should be irrelevant. Parents included. Don't let them think they have power over you even at this point, otherwise they'll abuse it.

Do you mean interracial or do you mean white/black.

Because society doesnt even seem to flinch at interracial stuff anymore (except for white/black sadly)

My parents are not society though, they're pretty set on the way they were raised in rural China, and it's hard to change that.

Like do you literally mean to say there exists no racism outside of white and black? That's definitely not true. I'm not talking about society at large...I'm talking about specific circumstances. People's families, friends, coworkers, random strangers they encountered at a museum, etc.

Man, that's just not true.

I would like to not have any reaction but my reaction is still "hey that's cool, glad they don't have any issues with being together". Like, I feel bad, but my first reaction isn't just "hey a couple", it's "hey be glad for an interracial couple that is happy". If that makes sense (probably has something to do with growing up in like a 95% white area).

Also, I don't have any good input here. I've had age differences, but that's it.

I don't really notice. Probably a sign that this kind of thing being a big deal is phasing out.

Thanks for understanding that it isn't a judgement, but just something that is still less common overall.

in my experiences its only a "Problem" to people if the girl is white

I've dated black and asian ladies and issues only came up if the chick was white

I've seen nobody give two fucks if the dude was white

Basically every relationship I have is interracial. I have had one crying mom and a couple of racist family members, but I pass so it is rarer for me to have to deal with.

Ah see I grew up in chicago. The PNW seems considerably worse than most places in most regards regarding race

I haven't dated anyone seriously in some time, so I can't speak for 'relationship,' but I have been out with people of different races

if anyone around here has thoughts on it they keep it to themselves. the area where I live is like 40% white, 40% black, and 20% other. I think people around here are just well adjusted and it doesn't literally blow their minds that people of different races are capable of interacting with each other.

my mom and sister live on the other side of the country and since I haven't been in a serious relationship lately the whole 'meeting family members' thing just hasn't come up. I know neither of them would care. don't really know what my extended family would think, but I'm not really close with any of them.

just to clarify;

this statement doesn't mean "I know people have thoughts about it, but they keep it quiet"

it means "If anyone has thoughts about it I'm not aware, because no one ever said anything regarding it while I was around"

the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence but it kinda seems like if there was this huge cultural movement against it I might have heard someone say something regarding it at some point in the last decade.

I only have interracial experience but uh I can say that my parents liked my (mainland) Chinese ex more than any of my brother or sister's gf/bfs for sure

Like 4 or something years later they both still ask about her from time to time -_- like "What is ____ up to? You should talk to her!" My mom loved that she was the only person to actually bring a gift we'd go visit on special occasions <_<

... This was not mutual on her family's side though and she only really had 1 aunt that was supportive of us. Even her friends were always pretty negative like a "that's not gonna last" thing, which I guess ended up accurate at least... but it was always real awkward going out with her and her friends since they just wanna speak their native language the whole night so I would usually just be sitting round.

I've never been in an interracial relationship, but I'm sure my parents' happiness over it would depend entirely on the race of the girl.
