This is an interesting argument to make, and is actually one that was made in Canada recently.

The argument was to deprive Canadians who went to fight ISIS of their citizenship, which obviously meant they couldn't return to Canada.

The counter-argument was that if we let them back in the country, at that point they can actually be charged and imprisoned. In addition there's also the whole can of worms of "can the government take someone's citizenship away, and if so for what else is that punishment going to be used for?"

It's an interesting debate and tbh I'm not even sure which side I'm on

Bullshit sentence. Should charged with treason and get life in prison or be executed. Everyone who joins and helps that organization deserves nothing better. I don't care if all you did was janitor work, you still willingly joined a terrorist organization that does horrific things. Nobody who does that deserves freedom.

Before passing any kind of murder/banishment sentence on him, I'd want to know why. What got him seduced by ISIS. What about the US pulled him away? Nobody is just "a fanatic" by default or by nature of their birth.

Probably a longing to be a part of something greater than themselves. To give their lives meaning. I dunno, spitballing here. But those tend to be the more vulnerable types.

I'd say it's probably the same as anyone who joins a cult. You don't have meaning in your life so you latch onto something that promises you the world in exchange for your loyalty. You begin to go down that rabbit hole, only communicate with those in said cult, view those outside of it as the villains, and slowly become ingrained.

Lots of people seek a reason to belong and want to believe that they are going to be apart of some great war or battle and they need to pledge their loyalty. The mundane reality that most people are simply average nobodies, which is completely fine, is a hard thing for a lot of people to take.
