There's so much 80's welfare queen myths being spouted in this topic. Cashiers don't follow people to their cars after ringing them up. It's nonsense and everyone claims they see it all the time when they absolutely don't.

This. I'm confused by the strong reactions. I'm not on a political side but I think this seems like a decent idea. I don't see how this is more "big government" if they were already giving out more money in the first place. But for many people this was doomed from the get go for being done under Trump's admin

You don't see how this is a bigger government. The government now how to house and ship out food. You have to go thru more levels if have needs that have to be checked. How in the hell is not that bigger government to you? And if you agree with that spiteful comment and think the only issue people have with this is trump , you are clearly solidly red.

Also you honestly think Dems would support going back to government cheese if it was done under anyone else besides trump. That is bull shit and you fucking know it.

Call me what you want. If the proposal is accurate they would be spending less money. This is just benefits in a different form. No one is forced to take government handouts.

If Michele Obama proposed this, they would market it as a healthy eating package and people would love it.

good to know trump is as stupid as he is fat. If you want to dictate what the poor eat at least give them chicken/pork and mixed vegetables, along with beans and some apples or someshit.

Yeah, I once checked out a woman who bought literally $200 worth of Mountain Dew with food stamps. She was so far she was riding in an electric motorized shopping cart and her daughter (who looked maybe 10 and was also obese just not morbidly so) was pushing a cart overflowing with Mountain Dew.

Not saying Trump's plan is right but there needs to be SOME overhaul of the SNAP program. I'm all for allowing people dietary choice but it needs to be used expressly for healthy choices, not literal junk. The model WIC uses is a good example of nutrition supplement done right

Liberals wouldn't tolerate any such restrictions. Enacting an extra, punitive tax that affects people who buy soda or junk food with their own money? Completely acceptable. Placing restrictions on what people can buy with government benefits? Completely unacceptable.

No. I never agreed with the mindset of "I want the government to take care of me, but they just can't tell me what to do." Complaining about free food is looking the gift horse in the mouth.

This is an excellent decision on the Trump administration.

they can't

much like drug testing for welfare benefits, the net cost is much higher than any savings; the motivation is making a subset of the population feel like they're getting to punish those lucky duckies. compulsory work for the unemployed is a similar concept.

Potentially. We can't know for sure but their proposal says it will cut costs significantly. Until some expert comes along and says they're wrong, that's all we really have to go by. I don't think any message board user is qualified to make these claims.

The proposal is also likely to enrage food retailers particularly Walmart, Target and Aldi that stand to lose billions if food stamp benefits are cut, analysts say. On Monday, the Food Marketing Institute, a trade association for grocery stores, condemned the Harvest Box proposal as expensive, inefficient and unlikely to generate any long-term government savings.

Ironically, that sort of criticism has also dogged Blue Apron, which saw its customer base contract in 2017. A recent report by the market research firm Datassential found that four in 10 lapsed meal-kit subscribers dropped their service because they were too costly.

As much as a third of the price per box goes toward shipping and logistics, which remain daunting, industry analysts told The Washington Post last June. Food policy experts expressed skepticism that the government could do better.

In a statement, Jim Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center, described the proposal as a a Rube-Goldberg designed system of commodity distribution via food boxes.

"[It] will be administratively costly, inefficient, stigmatizing, and prone to failure, Weill added. "[And it] will return the country to Depression-era anti-hunger approaches.

in short: the trump admin is almost never honest, this exists (in the form of blue apron, which mick mulvaney dishonestly tried to compare their plan to) and the associated shipping costs there are massive.
