Perhaps I'm not remembering Michelle Obama's program accurately, but I don't see how it's related to this at all. At most schools across the nation, you already don't "get a choice" of what school lunch you eat (or you choose between a limited number of options). Changing those options to be healthier isn't restricting what people can eat any more than they already were.

The package was described in the budget as consisting of "shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables." The boxes would not include fresh fruits or vegetables.

Great. None of that is healthy besides the veggies. You might aswell let people buy mcdonalds.

Cereal is healthy as long as you fortified low sugar stuff like cheerios or corn flakes.

Peanut butter is healthy in moderation. Gives you a bit of fiber, protein, vitamin E etc.

I do think there should be some way to limit or nudge people on food stamps towards healthier choices especially if the government wants to pay for health care.

Perhaps they could track what you buy with SNAP and if a certain percent of your purchases are healthy you get a "bonus"

This will help prevent abuse. I've seen it many times where people use foodstamps to buy $30 prime steak packages and other delicacies that are unnecessary for survival.

How is that abuse? And I truly doubt you've seen that kind of shit "many times" anyway. Why do people always have to make up anecdotal lies to shame people on food stamps?

Like I said, all these posters who make this claim fall into the same damn category as each other.

If you guys are so mad about food stamp recipients being able to buy name brand goods then why don't you boycott those name brands?

They're the ones who lobbied for it in the first place. And I'm sure it's no surprise which political affiliation most corporations hold.

Show some conviction.

For the record I don't believe you should be able to buy soda with food stamps. IIRC you can't in some states.

Sorry but buying only just bread, butter, fruits and milk with SNAP cards isnt really helping. You do realize that its really boring and repetitive to just buy just bread and milk every time when using SNAP cards? You know how dull that gets?

Its not gonna kill ya to splurge once in awhile getting some stuff different for a change like a 12 pack of pop or something.

Not everyone can live off of bread, butter and milk every frikkin time.

But school lunch is nothing new so why not make it healthier? Sadly since they can't force kids to eat all it did was lead to vegetables being thrown out. Of course people like you want to blame Obama for the isolated incidents where a school took away a kids lunch and replaced it with a school lunch to demonize her.

Supporting something just to piss others off is petty. Really people that do that need to grow up. There are immature people on the left and the right doing that when working together would actually solve problems.

Oh I live in the Chicago land area. There was no cheating for the soda tax. It was despised almost universally from day one. You had week ad campaigns saying how it was good for kids health while every Chicago news station was just waiting for it to end with no one thinking it was a good idea. Plus living in northwest Indiana as I did local stores had signs saying we had no soda tax advertising for people from Illinois to shop there. Clearly your hatred of the left has blinded you.

Yeah, I once checked out a woman who bought literally $200 worth of Mountain Dew with food stamps. She was so far she was riding in an electric motorized shopping cart and her daughter (who looked maybe 10 and was also obese just not morbidly so) was pushing a cart overflowing with Mountain Dew.

Not saying Trump's plan is right but there needs to be SOME overhaul of the SNAP program. I'm all for allowing people dietary choice but it needs to be used expressly for healthy choices, not literal junk. The model WIC uses is a good example of nutrition supplement done right

Liberals wouldn't tolerate any such restrictions. Enacting an extra, punitive tax that affects people who buy soda or junk food with their own money? Completely acceptable. Placing restrictions on what people can buy with government benefits? Completely unacceptable.

Omg do you people seriously lack basic nutritional knowledge. Literally the only thing there that could be considered bad by some is the milk. I imagine they aren't sending out fruit loops.

The milk is like one of the better things in there nutrition wise. Cold cereal and pasta is junk and is likely to be half the box. Things like chips, soda, and cookies should be banned from being purchases with SNAP funds.

As the old saying goes: beggars can't be choosers. I've thought such a program would be a good idea, not just to limit abuse, but to encourage nutrition in a world where the cheapest meals in the store as mini TV dinners and ramen loaded with salt and preservatives without a vegetable in sight. Unless he gets really good deals at the wholesale level it probably won't be a cash savings, but I can see the push to combat what he sees as a culture too accustomed to the system to seek [better] employment.

And the fact Trump causes knee jerk reactions aside, one thing the left hates is when someone wants to stop just handing money to the poor hoping they'll get their lives together eventually, but rather takes a firm hand to correct the mistakes and behaviors that led to needing assistance in the first place. So naturally they fight this because while it's rooted in good budgetary ideas (less junk food, generic brands), how dare someone control them. The government's job is to cover for all our mistakes until everything starts going good for us after all with no cost to us that need it.

And then they wonder why those working jobs see them as leeches.

Even if you agree with the idea that food stamps should be restricted to healthy food, you should still think this idea is moronic. In what universe does buying, shipping, stocking, and dispensing a monthly box of food to every single SNAP recipient end up costing the taxpayers less money? Where would you even keep/dispense this food? I've never heard of a nationalized food bank in this country. If there are, there sure aren't enough around for it to be convenient (or even possible) for every recipient to go there, so that'd probably necessitate buying/building new facilities.

And on a more political side, Republicans should be very, very worried if this idea goes through. It will most assuredly piss off ever single person on food stamps in the entire country.

This, cracking down on abuse is great but this suppose proposal is only more damaging in the long run. It's just like when democrats think that gun control is somehow going to stop mass shootings, yes we do have a gun problem but what you're proposing isn't going to solve it.

There's a lot of ways to streamline and improve everything over time. For example, gardening is still a thing. In many cases, the recipients could be given seed packets in place of boxes/cans of food. Seed packets would cost very little to ship and would be a negligible burden to our existing postal system.
