I've seen multiple very negative opinions on Three Billboards (haven't seen it myself). Guess it's ready polarizing?

Anyway, my favorite movie this year was Lady Bird. Hopefully it'll get at least one award!

Three Billboards was my favorite of the Oscar nominations, and one of my favorites of the year (along with Logan and Baby Driver)

I've seen negativity toward it (in particular, I was disappointed to see that Clint from CineFix hated it) but there's a HUGE range in how valid the reasoning is behind the negativity

Right now I'd say

Three Billboards > Shape of Water > Call Me By Your Name > Get Out > Dunkirk > Lady Bird > Darkest Hour >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Phantom Thread

Seeing The Post tonight but don't have high hopes for it

Phantom Thread may have been my most disappointing film in a long time. It actually had me questioning whether I really liked PTA, considering I haven't truly loved anything of his in a decade now.

Just saw Lady Bird. It was good, but still kind of just a standard coming-of-age film. Nothing too special. But hey, gotta have the token female nomination this year!

It's the perfect biopic for people who don't like biopics. It's narrated in a similar way to The Big Short (which I also quite liked) and even has a certain Scorsese vibe with the 4th wall breaking and the soundtrack (and the swearing!) Not to mention the incredible performances.

Yeah I Tonya was really funny and kind of broke the norm with biopics by flat out saying "maybe this all happened but who knows"

It's also really dark humor which I always like, and Janney and Robbie were both excellent

I, Tonya was pretty much just Fargo if Fargo was about figure skating. Dumb people doing dumb things that gets oddly serious and surprisingly heartfelt. I would have absolutely loved if it was nominated. One of the most enjoyable movies I saw in the theater.

I actually think there's a lot of categories that could go either way.

picture: Shape or Billboards. Possible Get Out upset
original screenplay: Get Out or Billboards. I'm picking a Lady Bird upset.
cinematography: Blade Runner will likely win, but Deakins could be overlooked yet again
costume design: Phantom Thread makes sense as the winner since it is about fashion, but Shape beat it at the costume design guild awards.
film editing/sound editing/sound mixing: Dunkirk or Baby Driver
score: Shape or Phantom Thread
song: Coco or Showman
visual effects: Apes or Blade Runner

Documentary and foreign language are somewhat hard to predict because the movies that have won a lot of other awards (Jane and In the Fade) aren't even nominated. I wouldn't be surprised really at any of the nominees in these categorizes winning.

Shorts are also anything could win categories.

All the acting categories do seem locked up though.

I meant the "major" categories.

All 4 acting categories are locks, maybe with upset potential in supporting actress. Guillermo del Toro is winning best director and Shape of Water is winning best picture. I'd be pretty stunned if I miss any of those.

I feel like a supporting actor upset is more likely than actress. I really feel like Dafoe might be a possibility, especially since it's rare that Dafoe really gets credit as an actor

then again I thought Michael Keaton was a sure thing for Birdman and that didn't work out
