Define "legally bought." At some point, most guns were legally purchased. However, in the case of student shootings, usually the gun was legally purchased by a relative then stolen by the shooter.

What about gifted? I believe California allows the gifting of guns but said transfer must be done through a licensed retailer. I do wonder how many folks ignore this though or how lax said transfer is in other states.

You can find any working legally purchased gun in the average American household then go to town because of how unimportant gun laws are because of "mah second amendment rights" and good luck having anything done about that because the gun companies are going to lobby to hell to make sure they stay that way.

Given that many are minors, they can't legally gift them the gun in the first place-- afaik, anyway, and it may vary by state. As a general practice, I'm not sure how common it may be anyway. The vast majority of guns are purchased for use or straw-purchased.

I'm glad to see these guns the relatives are buying are really doing a good job for self defense then. Having those legal guns in civilian hands is definitely making the world a better place. Lets just give teachers guns to give them another place to steal guns from.

And regardless, that isn't even true for most major recent cases. The majority of the major mass shooters of the past few years did not steal their guns from relatives. They legally purchased the guns themselves, and in many cases had documented mental health problems or even criminal histories, but still managed to purchase guns legally.

Of the 10 most deadly shootings in America over the past 6 years, 9 were done with guns that were legally purchased by the perpetrator, the only one that was stolen from a relative was for Sandy Hook. None were illegally purchased.

Exactly, these people shouldn't have passed the background check. Either the background check failed, the rules aren't strong enough or it was purchased without a background check, thusly making the entire transaction illegal. The only people shooting up others like this are the crazies with mental health issues that never got addressed.

You can gift a gun to a minor, I dont know about juveniles though. You only have to be 18 to legally a own a handgun or rifle.

I always forget about gunshows. Yeah backgrpund checls need to be mandatory no matter what. Don't know how to do it for gun shows. Maybe get a special mark on your I.D. or something. Only people with these marks can get in. Put it into law and any gun shows after a certain date have to check I.D. Yeah make a it annoying yo go to gun shows but that's the point. Making hurdles for its a hell of a lot harder for shit like this to happen.

Are there background checks prior to registering and entering said gun show? I know some folks are against regulations but if we're gonna have background checks, can we not half-ass it and do it across the board?
