But they're sold out everywhere due to cryptocurrency mining

Last I checked the Quadros are good for CAD but not for machine learning. Much better performance per dollar out of a GTX card, specifically a 1080ti or a Titan.

it sucks, I was looking at graphics cards the other week and there was literally nothing available unless I wanted to pay like 3x or more the normal price for a cheaper one and like hell im doing that

There's some listed on pcpartpicker, last I checked the cheapest were like $900-1000 CAD.

Was planning on doing a build soon but I might wait for the GTX 2XXX series.

Yeah fuck these prices, just gonna use an EC2 compute instance on Amazon or something.

900-1000+ is par for the course for the highest end GTX cards in Canada, they usually don't go down from that too much. Keep in mind I'm talking about the 1080 Ti.

There's a 1070 Ti listed for $622, which in the current climate is a pretty good deal. A nice MSI card.

I resorted to installing Elementary OS (a Linux distro built on top of Ubuntu IIRC) and setting it up with tensorflow and deepspeech. Importing and processing 70 gigs of data is taking forever and it's slamming my laptop's CPU quite hard. >_>

All it has is a 960m so once I start the training process I'll probably still need to use the CPU since the GPU is just 2 GB...

i still have to figure out a ML idea to do. I still have a simple convolutional network that I used for a course project

I have a ton of ideas for ML. The biggest constraint recently was working on the infrastructure piece first. Got all of that ready, now diving in to building out my models and learning pipeline.

What would draw the average everyman to machine learning?

An average everyman? probably nothing, honestly. There are nice tools out there for getting started but they still require a good amount of technical and theoretical knowledge in order to do anything meaningful or practical.

not really. You just have to understand the concept of gradient descent and you are good to go. Even with that said, all the details are encapsulated away in APIs. You can start with the tensorflow demo implementation and just tweak it to suit your application

I mean if you've never written a line of code in your life, I don't think any of tensorflow's demos are going to be enough to get you to do anything meaningful or practical with tensorflow. >_>
