If time travel is ever to be feasible, it'd probably only work by moving further/'faster' into the future, not into the past.

They say when you travel close to or at the speed of light you age more slowly. Or something like that.

Now I remember that book we had to read back in highschool. "A sound of thunder" I believe. I honestly don't remember much other than it was about using time travel to hunt dinosaurs and somehow the dude messed up the future.

Presumably, he's using similar logic to what Wydrah used on this forum years ago to "proof" why time travel can't exist - ie, that if someone invents it in the future, they'd travel back to the past, and we'd be tripping over time travellers all the time and thus have proof that time travel WAS invented. But since that hasn't happened, clearly, time travel is never invented in our future.

Of course, in Wydrah's case, his argument was that if time travel is invented within our lifetimes, he would use it to travel backwards in time to rape his past self, and since that never happened, time travel does not exist. In spite of that logic failing on at least a few different levels.

aka, "The story that introduced the term "Butterfly Effect" to the pop culture consciousness.

Ahhh yes that's right. He fell off the track and crushed the butterfly.

Is that really where the term originated though? Or did he just use it as the inspiration for the story?

Bradbury's usage predates the actual scientific use of the term by about a decade.

It's just one of those quirks of sci-fi that a lot of people never realize. Like the fact that the word "robotics" was invented by Isaac Asimov.

Time travel as a plot device really, really irritates me.

For instance--hop in your Delorian, punch in a date and time and you're off!

Except for one huge problem. The odds are overwhelming that when you materialize at your destination in time, your destination in space is likely to be the black void of space. The Earth, the entire solar system, it's place in the galactic plane, and even the space between everything has changed in the time between then and now whether you're going forwards or backwards.

All of this also ignores the second law of thermodynamics.

You may get some wiggle room if your time travel mcguffin is a spaceship already in space, but there's still a hell of a lot more to it than just changing your position relative to time.
