Lucky dog. Think it's still a bit over 90 in my area.

If he was going to serve as a reluctant hero, he would have saved Finn & Rose alongside BB8. As for the FO, they have no real use for him. They just paid him and sent him on his way. Plus it's worth noting that what's-her-face from the first movie only appeared as a hologram, so it's not like every bigger character introduced serves a large purpose in these films

My instincts are top notch. The prepair person never showed up. My house is still a hot box. The only saving grace is that the wife is walking around naked, but it's too hot to take advantage.

Life is un fair sometimes.

The other good news is that it's going to rain for the next three days so it will be at least ten degrees cooler than it normally would be this time of year. Because it's the 4th tomorrow it means it will be at least Thursday before we even get a whiff of someone looking at the a.c.

No video games. Just misery. Happy 4th everyone.

I live in New Jersey, and if my A/C stopped working for even three days, I'd probably be dead.

I actually have six different units in my house, partly because I don't feel like going to the hassle of getting central air, but also because I don't like the all-or-nothing potential for central air to stop working.

I have both, mostly because there have been times that my central air has gone out. I'm honestly not sure that I'd rent or buy a property without central air.

On a quasi-related side-note, I might cave and buy solar panels within the next few years since every few years lately there seems to be a storm that knocks out power for like a week.

The saga continues.

I went to dialysis today where the a.c. actually worked. Even with the needles in my chest I managed to sleep like a baby. I woke up and texted the damn landlord to make sure to send the repair man out to look at the unit. She says he would be there later today. I come home and put the wife to sleep as she has to work tonight. So, I sit In the living room under the fan waiting for the repair man. I fall asleep again because staying awake is horrible because of the heat. I wake back up around 3:30 and no repair man.

I text her again and tell her that I am way too sick to sit In this heat. Which is the truth. She says he will be there by 5.

He finally shows up. He works on the unit and tells me it needs a new coil, but I can run it to get some cool air. He said he will ne back on Thursday if it's not working. 3 hours later the thermostat still reads 81. Its blowing cool air, but not enough to cool the house.

I am tempted to call a 24 hour repair service and have her pay for it out of the rent for next month. I'm notsure that's going to go well at all, but I'm running out of patience.

What do you follow geeks think I should do?

If it was a matter of not making rent for the next month, I'd probably just tough it out myself. However, I'm not sure if that's as viable with your health issues.

Decided to catch up on the Simpsons since it's been a while since I watched an episode and realized I'd missed an earlier episode in s28 entitled "Moho House" which I wish I had continued to overlook. It's probably one of the worst episodes I can remember. It's a Simpson-marriage-having-problems episode -- something done done countless times already in the show's history, which has always been an uncomfortable premise -- where I can't recall a single joke really hitting.

It was also kinda notable for barely featuring Bart & Lisa. They only appear in a dinner table scene early on and then during a 25-30 second scene where Homer stops into see both of them (playing checkers in one of their rooms).

The series got a second wind around s25 but as of s28 things are back to extremely hit or miss. (And yes, I know many of the geek topic regulars have wanted it ended already.)

Oh, and in other news, I kinda want to get back to watching a movie a day when possible. (Especially because I have massive queues, backlogs, etc, that I want to get through.) Maybe a decade or so ago I was in the habit of doing it and, generally speaking, my media consumption has drastically gone down in recent years. Sometimes life has gotten in the way but mostly I just seem to get sidetracked.

Also need to get back into reading regularly at some point, but that's a battle for another day. (And I really need to just do audiobooks while driving and walking.)

I should clarify that my prior remark seen above meant that it preceded an episode or two I had already watched. It's actually the next-to-last episode of that season. I had somehow skipped ahead to watch "Dog Town" and s29's "The Serfsons" (the latter of which was a fun concept with a few really funny gags, but the rest was mostly just a mishmash of fantasy parodies whose quality was barely better than the Epic Movie series).

At any rate, might try to start catching up on the Simpsons. It looks like there are 21 episodes up so far.

(Started s29e2 and already cracking up with Homer's "Stupid recurring dreams. Why can't brains come up with something new? That's why they're losing viewers to Netflix!" Reminds me of another great quip (from season 21?) where Homer remarked in regards to church collections, "If god needs money, why doesn't he just write another Bible? The first one sold well.")

Sweet Christmas, the Simpsons hit it out of the park with "Springfield Splendor" (s29e2)! Fantastic episode, barring a characterization issue and a mild slump towards the end.

Synopsis:
Marge and Lisa turn Lisa's experiences into a pop culture hit, but they struggle with creative differences.

One of my favorite lines from the episode that also sums things up nicely (major spoilers)
"Let me tell you something, Lisa. When you give birth to something, you have no control over what it turns into . All you can do is surrender to the nightmare." -Therapist

As I've probably mentioned before, Homer and Bart often do their best work as background characters. They have a number of pretty humorous supporting gags, but some of their best jokes (especially Homer's) comes from stuff that's just happening in the background (ie, to illustrate that Marge and Lisa worked throughout the night, Homer is seen with a pizza deliveryman and then later a waffle deliveryman)

It's also a great approach because it eliminates the need to do a shitty b-side story just to give Homer and Bart something to do.

The Lisa/Marge story is pretty strong and, for the most part, does a decent job of mixing humor and poignancy. The one *major* gripe I had was when Lisa and Marge were arguing in terms of their respective creative inputs in the basement because the scenario and even the dialog evoked shades of Homer doing the exact same thing as Lisa throughout the series, ironically enough to Lisa at times (such as the restaurant review episode).

And, of course, the fact that Lisa and Marge's situations are eventually reversed also feels like it's been done too many times already. While there's a fresh coat of paint and it's a very well-told story, the episode has been done quite a few times now -- although that's to be expected with a show that's run 29 seasons.

I should also mention that one of my favorite bits is that Sad Girl: the Musical very clearly seems to be aping the theme from Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, along with other homages to the show. It's incredibly apropos, especially given the previews-version of SM:TOTD which was criticized for its more avante-garde elements that felt a bit out of place. (As opposed to the revamp which felt like a musical version of the Raimi film.)

Favorite quotes from the episode:
After looking at a sailboat catalog, Homer picks up the phone and says, "Hello, coast guard? Get ready to search for my body in about a month." Later on in the episode, it's followed up by Homer dejectedly calling them again and calling it off.

When the Ralph actor lands on Ralph's lap near the end, Ralph asks, "Which of us is me?"

And, of course:
"Stupid recurring dreams. Why can't brains come up with something new? That's why they're losing viewers to Netflix!" - Homer

Was thinking about city and town names, specifically in terms of naming conventions. It's something you kinda take for granted growing up in it but I was hearing what some Chinese cities/towns translated to a ways back -- literally stuff like sand river town or something -- which made me a big more cognizant regarding names. (And, of course, when I first moved to CT, I also noticed that many of the towns had a "-bury" suffix, which is apparently a derivation of "burg/burgh" meaning tow.)

For instance, Connecticut has a lot of towns with a "-field" suffix in the name -- Bloomfield, Fairfield, Ridgefield, Brookfield, Enfield, Suffield, Mansfield, etc (and then "New" variations -- like New Milford). Basically they're just mildly descriptive names of topography. Ditto for a town we have that's just called Deep River.

And, of course, we have a Watertown, a Waterford, and a Waterbury. Those aren't even terribly descriptive.

Now, if Connecticut was a fantasy kingdom, I imagine it would be criticized for its similar-sounding names being confusing >_> That said, fantasy novels/films/shows only really focus on a handful of significant cities/towns -- generally the largest -- so I guess that might be kinda moot. Granted, in fantasy settings and older history, a lot of things might not necessarily be named at all or would be known by the landowner's name.

The a.c. somehow started working between last night when I went to bed and this morning when the wife returned from work.

She came into the bedroom and found me under the covers with the kitty cats, and woke me up screaming,

"You know rhe thermostat is at 69?"

I went....

"Oh, that's why I'm under the cover not sweating. I'll be damned. It's a 4th ot July miracle."

I'm not sure why the a.c. is working again. Maybe it just needed 8 hours of being on again to cool down the house. (That's a record if you ask me.) But either way I turned down all the fans, and now I'm freezing my southern butt off once again. Happy Days!

The repair man is supposed to come tomorrow 5o check it again, and I guess it needs more work, but in the meantime I'm going to eat some bbq pork chops and enjoy the 4th.

Happy 4th everyone. I will continue to update you all with news once there is some.

Side note: My new kitten Beerus is scared of all the fireworks. I don't live in the city limits, because people suck, and so it's legal to fire fireworks in the streets and yards. So last night Beerus was in the window, after The Mormons stopped by....

Yes, two Mormon girls. One black and one white, strolled up to the door, I thought it was the repair man. I rolled over in my wheelchair and opened the door. My other cat, Batman, likes to run outside, because he's a jerk face, so I'm watching out for him while keeping an eye on Beerus too. I look at the girls and go...

"You can peddle your Jesus elsewhere. Unless he can instantly regrow my right leg I'm not interested." (It's my default response to God peddlers, as it's the south and the country, so it happens at least twice a month.)

They look at each other and walk away in silence. Batman did not escape.

A few seconds later fireworks go off and Beerus is clawing into my shoulder. Once I detach his little butt another set of fireworks goes off and he runs and hides in a box. This continues most of the evening as people are confused about the date. It's the 3rd, not the fourth, but I was a kid once so it's cool.

Repair men, Mormons, miracle air conditioning repairs, and claw shoulder scars. It all means something but I'll be damned if I know what it is.

We can celebrate the miracle of the a.c. every 4th. It shall be a Geek tradition, if any of us remember.

Now back to regular Geek stuff.

Barman # 50 drops today. I guess I should post a spoiler warning, but USA Today runs everything anyway.

Go figure, Bruce and Selina didn't get married. DC is really opposed to their characters getting hitched. Looking at you Batwoman."

Theres some nonsense about his rouges gallery coming together to make sure he's broken emotionally, but that's dumb. Because a happy Batman isn't a dangerous Batman.

That's the true way to victory, let him get soft from being happy. If he's got a wife and a possible new kid to go home to, he's going to be too preoccupied with her and possibly a second kid to do his night job. That balance would create a better long term arc versus what they did.

A lot of East Coast names come from places in England, which in turn derive from Celtic or Anglo-Saxon words, and which often translate down into incredibly simplistic meanings. Like Greenwich ("the green settlement") or stuff like New York (where York in England is originally derived from Brythonic via Latin and filtered through Norse, and means something like "place where there's yew trees"). Then it gets even more confusing with names like "Watergate", where you assume it means there was a gate there, except in Norse it actually just means "road". In a similar way, you have fancier names like Midgard, which literally just means "Middle Earth" (or places like "Alfheim", which just means "Elf Home"). -berg means hill/mountain, -dale means valley, -mere means lake/pond, and ford means, well, there's a -ford somewhere.

Plus, we also have a smattering (or more than a smattering) of names based on Native American tribal words. Like how in New Jersey, there's the town of Manalapan - which basically means "good land to settle on". Or there's Parsippany - "place where the river winds through the valley". Then it gets even more complicated when you have deliberate fusions of languages, like Minneapolis (Native + Greek = "water city") or Perth Amboy (Scottish + Native = "forest on level ground").

But even beyond those, New Jersey has place names like Old Bridge (named after an old bridge), Woodbridge (ditto), Green Brook (guess), Wildwood, Sayreville (named after the Sayre family, who owned the land), Monroe (named after the US President), and so on.

And then you get into truly complicated, where you can have deliberate manipulations like Soho or Tribeca in NYC (which mean, respectively, "South of Houston Street" and "The Triangle Below Canal Street").

There are very few "original", "meaningless" names in the world. If you don't know what a name means, it just means someone named it in another language or got fancy with it.

It's sort of similar to how personal names work. We're so used to hearing specific names AS names, we've completely divorced them from the original meanings (especially if those meanings are derived from languages other than English). We can think it's funny when people in Asia or Native Americans have names like "Fall Breeze" or "Sitting Bull", but we don't think about the fact that those are translated versions of their names (and, for instance, in his own language Sitting Bull's name was actually Tatanka Iyotake).

Meanwhile, some of the most popular Western baby names so far in 2018 include Wisdom (Sophia), Lion (Leo), Strong (Charlie), Rival (Amelia), and Wolf Soldier (Oliver).

People name their kids after stuff in the Bible or characters from other stories or shows they saw on TV or just because they know someone else with the name, but without realizing that Nathaniel means "God has given" or that Ethan means "steadfast" or Alexander means "Defender of Men".

Even the sort of assholes who want to name their kid "Sephiroth" don't realize that's a reference to Hebrew occultism, and means "emanations".

It also doesn't help that a lot of the so-called "baby name meaning" sites on the Web that claim to tell you the secret symbolism behind names mostly make shit up, muddying the waters.

We also have a Woodbridge. And personal naming conventions is another subject I've often thought about. Especially because fantasy novels go out of their way to be more complex with things whereas the actual historic people would both go pretty basic (other than variant spellings -- when the names were written at all -- due to a non-standardized language) and fairly common.

It's pretty universal - most names for people and places in every culture stem from some meaning, either in that culture's native language, or some previous language that has since become obscure. There's the occasional name that crops up that seems like someone just smashed sounds together to make a name (though even then, it might just be a case of not knowing the original derivation), but most names we can sort of puzzle out if we try.

But we've just going so used to hearing names AS names, we've kind of divorced them from meanings.

New York was named after York in England. Which was a Norman/English corruption of Jorvik, which was the Scandinavian corruption of Anglo-Saxon Eoforwic, which was a corruption of the Latin Eboracum, which was based on the Celtic place name that meant "place of yew trees".

That sort of evolution isn't really unique to York - lots of places that endured over time through cultural changes and conquest would often change names through slow drift (like Cadiz changing from Gadir to Gadeira to Gades to Qadis to Cadiz, or Marseille starting out as Massalia and going through a few changes). And that's not getting into stuff like Istanbul/Constantinople (which was also called Byzantium and Nova Roma, though the song doesn't mention those).

Well, that can also be a cultural thing - sure, medieval British people were named stuff like Bob or George or Harry or whatever, but then you go back to Sumeria where people had names like En-men-gal-ana or Barsal-nuna or Mesh-ki-ang-gasher. Or Egypt, where you've got Semerkhet or Neferkasokar or Hotepsekhemwy.

Granted, it's usually a case where the nobility goes out of their way to have more grandiose or meaningful names than the peasants who might have shorter names, but there's certainly historical evidence for longer and fancy names for "interesting" people, while most of the shorter, simpler names are sort of reserved for the shitty NPCs like the dung-shoveler or the random farmer serf.

The real problem is that a lot of fantasy novels are trying to ape Tolkien, where all of his characters had weird fantasy names. The difference is, Tolkien was insane about language, and literally every name every character in every story he's ever written has is based on a language he came up with. So Aragorn means "noble warrior" and Galadriel is "crowned maiden" and Gandalf is "man with staff", and so on. But shittier hack fantasy writers who try to copy his aesthetic without understanding it or caring about those sorts of things just use elaborate fancy names that sound similar, but don't really mean anything.

There's the occasional name that crops up that seems like someone just smashed sounds together to make a name (though even then, it might just be a case of not knowing the original derivation), but most names we can sort of puzzle out if we try.

Are name mash-ups much used in fantasy? I mean, excluding somebody tweaking the name of a fantasy monster or something to reflect what they changed about the fantasy creature (ie, if somebody said "Ursataur" to make people think of a man-bear hybrid, particularly since people overlook that the "Mino" in minotaur referred to a king, not a bull). Because that seems like a pretty safe naming convention.

How should fantasy handle the topic of derived names? Should they just go with words with very distant roots (where the name is a derivation of a derivation of a derivation across multiple languages and cultures, some of which wouldn't necessarily make sense), stay on the shallower side with things taken specifically from one or two cultures where the meaning has been lost over time (ie, Hebrew names), just go with a smorgasbord of derivations commonly used irl, or not touch derivations at all in favor of things with readily understood meanings (ie, flower names, tree names, etc, although... technically those were probably derived from something originally as well)?

For the purposes of world-building, language has to play a role which influences naming conventions. However, is it reasonable to think that you'd have as many different cultural impacts as our modern society or even as, say, medieval Europe?

Personally, I've never been big on fantasy languages -- and I seem to recall you being the same (or, perhaps, you only dislike the poorly done ones) -- so I've always had mixed feelings on words derived from fantasy languages. (Doubly so when so many other culturally rich languages already exist with their fair share of cool words. Granted, some of so lesser-used that the names feel like an author's clumsy invention -- like many Celtic words, for instance.)

Now I either have Strep throat or tonsillitis.

This world just keeps on giving. It hurts to swallow, I have a bit of a cough, and my lymph notes are swallows on my left side in my throat. I assume it's strep throat because one of the ladies at the dialysis clinic said something about it last week. It hit me right in the middle of treatment yesterday morning, and I've been slightly miserable ever since.

I can't catch a break. Except the a.c. thing.

So as I post this I'm in my kitchen, feeling like crap, and the repair man is out here again to replace the coil in the a.c. unit. The funny thing is that he didn't have a clue that the unit was actually working prior to his arrival. The part needs to be replaced anyway so I'm not saying crap.

Knowing my luck him replacing the coil is going to make the damn unit stop working all together, and I will be screwed again.

I will keep you informed.

I was going to play Dad of boy this weekend, but if I keep going like this the only game I'm playing is take the antibiotics and rest.

Finally watched Doctor Strange. It was pretty good. The effects were really neat, but they were kinda distracting at times. Granted, I half-wish I had held off until *after* the sequel had come out =x

Of course, the downside on the inevitable sequel is that it'll supposedly feature Nightmare as the villain instead of the glorious Shuma-Gorath. Between this and the Justice League film not featuring Starro, I'm beginning to get the impression that Hollywood really dislikes space starfish.

It might be because I'm sick, but the a.c. felt better before he "Fixed" The unit and replaced the coil. I'm probably just burning up, and the wife is at work so I can't really get a comparison. Either way the a.c. is running and blowing cool air so I'm not going to complain too much.

As for my throat, I took some antibiotics and some old pain medicine I had lying around and it's helping a little. I'm getting the clarity I have when I'm not in agonizing pain. So I guess I will just deal and hope it goes away by Monday. If not I'm going to the doctor.

I can't focus on something like Dad of boy like this, but I have an urge to play some video games. I'm going through withdrawals. Mainly withdrawals from JRPG's.

What I need to do is find a mindless jrpg to pop in when I'm feeling under the weather, and just grind. I don't mind the grind in an old game like Grandia or Breath of Fire. I know the plot, but I love the games, so it's fun. Put on a podcast on in the back ground, and have fun.

That's probably not going to happen because the wife goes to a day schedule in like 9 days. So she'll be at home with me in the evenings and nights now. No more late night gaming.

Next post will be more geek related because there is some news. But I'm in pain, I do not want to go to life saving blood filtering in the morning, and my throat feels like it's trying to swallow rocks every 5 seconds, and I think the a.c. is worse.

Geek news as promised.

Ole Nic Cage, of Raising Arizona fame, (His best movie) is going to voice Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming "Into the Spider-Verse" movie.

That's actually a good choice. Sadly I wish they would find a way to incorporate Christopher Daniel Barns (90's Spider-Man) into he film somehow. They still could, but he was Spider-Man Noir in the Shattered Dimensions video game, so I was hoping for the symertey.

Keeping with the Spider-Man stuff. I've actually been enjoying Marvel's Spider-Man. They started season 2 a few weeks ago, it's airing on Disney XD, and they have a lot of the character stuff right. My only complaint, and the wife pointed it out, is that they instructed Robbie Draymond, to not even alter his Spider-Man voice and his Peter Parker voice.

What made Batman: The animated Series so great, among so many other wonderful things, was that Bruce Wayne and Batman sounded different. (Well, that and BTAS was so well written.) Considering that Peter interacts with the same people in and out of costume it would make sense to have them sound slightly different.

Voice shenanigans aside it's a fun show. I suggest you all give jta peak. It's not as good as Spectacular Spider-Man, but it's still solid.

Fun fact that I didn't notice is that Robbie Draymond does the voice of Spider-Man and Goro Akeci in Persona 5. Persona 5 the animaged series just hit Hulu too. I have Bank Robber's Hulu account so it's free for me. I have to check it out and report back when I watch a few episodes.

More fun fact, Persona 5 is the best game of last year. If you have a Ps3 or Ps4 go buy it now. It's great.

It's an entire new show. The 4th wall stuff, and Saved by the Bell timeouts, ruined Ultimate Spider-Man for me. Even if the animation quality is the best of any Spider-Man show ever.

In more Spider-Man news, Steve Ditko passed away this week. He was 90. Rather he passed away on June 29th, and we are just finding out about it yesterday.

Fun Facts: Ditko created Martian Manhunter and Doctor Strange too. He was also a recluse too, which is why we just found out he passed more than a week after his death. He learned what we are all starting to understand, people stink, why bother with a great deal of them?

Also, I liked the Doctor Strange movie. The visuals were trippy, but I recently rewatched it on Nrtfkix, and it was as solid as I remembered. Good stuff, even with my man crush on Cumberbatch.

Spectacular Spider-Man was by far the best Spider-Man show. Ultimate had more detailed characters but worse animation. The new show is better than Ultimate but still a step-down from Spectacular. Some if the character designs are questionable. It seems like someone in the animation studio mixed up the concept art for Harry and Alistair.

Far beyond that. He was a dyed-in-the-wool Objectivist.

He basically created The Question as a character to explore and promote that ideology (which is why Alan Moore parodied him with Rorschach - only to be kind of horrified when so many people saw Rorschach as being completely right and the only true hero in the story).

Ditko was also one of the very few creators who adamantly denied he had any right to future profits for his work because he was on a work-for-hire contract, and who regularly shit on artists like Kirby who complained or sued to get royalties. Which is why Marvel loved promoting him and Stan Lee (who was always willing to play ball and be the corporate spokesman) over people like Kirby.

The saga is over.

The a.c. is working fine again. It's blowing nice bouts of recycled air, and the wife and I are snuggled under our blankets again.

My throat is getting better, and my nose is fine. I guess I'm on the mend, and hopefully by the middle of the week that everything will be back to my normal self.

The wife and I are saving up money to go to Vegas next year. It will be an ironic vacation because we live in a casino town. Hell, she works at a casino. Which means we will get discounts on our stay. 300 dollar a week for 1200 square foot suite. She's got the hook up. We just need money for flights, food, and a rental car for my trips to and from the blood filtering.

I bring up the saving of the money because I haven't been to the movies since Infinity War. Now Ant Man and the Wasp is out, and I'm going to be behind on my Marvel movies. I didn't get to see the dinosaurs either. But it will be worth it next April to finally go on a honeymoon.

We didn't go when we got married because about a week after my wedding I got my right leg cut off, then it was straight to rehab, then she got a new job, and life, so no honeymoon ever happened. Now it will great, if it works out.

Mixed feelings about Black Lightning s1 so far. It's milking a lot of hot button issues, which gets a bit annoying, especially since it's not really balanced to any extent (well, other than Jeff's pragmatism) -- yeah, I get it, the show is SJW, enough virtue-signalling. And, I'm not sure if it's backstory or bad writing, but the show has a lot of pointless mysteries, references, and intrigue (especially where the tailor is concerned).

Of course, my biggest issue might be the tone, which flips from grimdark serious (like we saw with Lala and Will) to cartoonish, stereotypical comic stuff (Tobias and his henchmen, Lady Eve, etc). The costume also kinda straddles both worlds, although it falls more into the goofy comic side of things. Well, that and Anissa's longass b-side story arc which eats up a lot of time every episode. And, well, most of the fight sequences have been pretty lousy.

On the plus side, I like the cast. The sisters play off each other very well. BL's strained relationship with his wife has a nice dynamic. Tobias steals almost every scene he's in. And his henchman are pretty neat.

Currently 6 episodes in, looks like a 13-episode season. I thought I'd enjoy the show a lot more than I have, although I'm still digging it.

the amount of foreshadowing they use the Biggie crown portrait for in the Harlem's Paradise office across both seasons is like some hamfisted first year art student level shit and it's even more jarring than the midseason villain shift in s1.

My other big question, is how is the Netflix side of the MCU going to address the snap?

The wife and I binged the final 9 episodes of Arrow Season 6. I'm really starting ro think that these CW DC shows are better digested in big bites like I did with Arrow rhis morning than in smaller week to week helpings.

I kind of did the same thing with The Flash a few weeks ago, and the show plays out better without having to wait and think about what went wrong with the previous episode, especially if it starts seconds later after that one just ended.

Also, my throat feels better, but it's not 100% it hurt like hell last night before bed, but only hurt a bit before the Arrow binge this morning. It was a nice relaxing Moday with cool a.c. and leftover fried chicken from our nig Sunday dinner. (I make bomb fried chicken because I learned from my old black mama. Thanks mama.)

Finished Black Lightning s1 last night and... well, what a mess. The show tried to do way too much with way too many characters. They also rushed through what should have been significant storylines, important plot points, major revelations, etc. Often no sooner than something happens, it immediately gets resolved. (Best case-in-point happens in e13 when BL believes he's lost his powers... for almost 5 minutes before Jennifer gives him a super-hug which restores his abilities.)

The thing that pisses me off the most involves (later season 1 spoilers) Lala, who comes back from the dead and has this whole mystery surrounding him where he's seeing the ghosts of his victims. We have a lot of scenes featuring his return then Tobias reveals he just brought him back -- and we get 2-3 more scenes featuring Lala -- and then the payoff is a botched assassination attempt where in Lala is intended to kill Martin... and even that's handled badly. Granted, Lala *might* somehow be able to come back, although I doubt it. What we got was a lot of build for fucking nothing.

Then you have Thunder becoming well-known despite never being shown doing anything. Apparently she became more popular than Black Lightning overnight despite not having *one* crimefighting scene by herself and people know her by sight despite the fact that most of the scenes involving her didn't even have witnesses. That's just shitty storytelling and writing.

And don't get me started on Tori. Tobias's sister was in the show for a handful of episodes, had a bunch of scenes, contributed very little to the story, got killed, and the entire fallout amounted to murdering a henchman. It should have amounted to something far larger than it did because, once again, they rushed through it. And one of her major ideas -- turning Khalil against BL to change public opinion -- never even came to fruition; instead, he just becomes a supervillain henchman

While I feel that they shouldn't have even gotten that into the ASA this season, I'm not sure I could stomach the pointless intrigue that much longer.

That said, the show has a great cast and a lot of likable characters. Even a lot of the supporting characters were pretty neat. Syonide is a fox and I loved her nonverbal responses (expressions, shrugs, etc); of course, actually talking isn't her forte.

And, for all the show's talk about not murdering, the fact that the Pierce family stands idly by while Gambi occasionally executes people is glaringly awful characterization.

The show also has a number of kinda weird contrivances to make things fit. Early on, we learned that BL retired following his apparent death which, in that same event, he believed he killed Tobias Whale. Tobias stayed in hiding yet believed he killed BL. Throughout the rest of the show, we get no additional details as to that event although Gambi is revealed as having played a hand in faking Tobias's death -- and yet, as we see from a small wanted poster in the police station during the first episode, the cops believe Tobias is alive. Given that BL was supposed to be dead, who were they even trying to fool?

As for Tobias himself, he has some weird anti-aging drug, meaning that he could kill Alvin Pierce when BL was a teen and still be reasonably young. That said, Tobias forcing Alvin to "eat his words" by having his thugs shove papers down Alvin's throat until he suffocated was one of the coolest scenes in the show.

Having kidney failure stinks.

First you get needles shoved into you three times a week, four hours at a time. Non shocking news of the day, needles hurt.

Then the worst part is the fluid restriction. I can only drink 32 fluid ounces in a 24 hour period. If you haven't ever measured it, that is not a whole lot of water or liquid of any kind

So, I just kind of ignore it and drink as much as I like until I'm not thirsty any longer. It's not healthy, but until I get short of breath, and can't breathe, I really don't see this as an issue. Doctors and nurses be damned.

Anyway, this weekend I was actually really good on my fluid Intake. I no longer urinate so any fluid I take in stays with me until I get it taken out. I felt good this morning going to dialysis. Then about an hour into treatment I kind of go deaf.

It turns out that my body was use to working on a lot more fluid. So when they went to take it all off this morning there was nothing left to keep the rest of my body working, and my body just stopped working, mostly my hearing.

So, I'm presently deaf unti my body adjust again. My hearing is slowly coming back, but it will be Thuradsy morning before I'm normal again. Just in time for more dialysis.

Therefore, I can't play Dad or Boy again because I can't hear the game.

Probably couldn't afford her. Granted, she'll probably cameo towards the end of the season to help Luke realize the error of his ways or after he's made his realization. Also, if Tilda becoming the season's big bad would seem a little weird, given that she didn't like her mom's criminal ties and killed her because of the shit she did. Granted, they could develop her into that although... eh. Mariah stayed out of it because she was worried about ramifications, whereas Tilda had an issue with the morality of it all. Plus it's not like you don't already have other crime bosses, etc, to contend with, as well as Luke's internal battles.

Except for the fact that Tilda shows up at Harlem's Paradise in her full Nightshade costume from the comics at the end of the finale. Double afro puffs, deep plunge neckline green dress and all. It *might* be an homage to the source material, but with Misty running around with her Rand Corp bionic arm too, I'd say they're running out of snake themed villains for Luke to deal with and are moving on with other options.

P.O. and I love this movie. Mainly because it's a damn good movie. If you haven't seen it take the hour and a half to watch it, you won't be disappointed.

I also recommend "Trading Places." Not only does Jamie Lee Curtis get naked, it was a time when Eddie Murphu was funny. That ended I 89 after "Coming to America" was released.

It's one of those movies you just assume everybody has seen by this point, although Coming to America is probably the most popular of the two.

Also, Coming to America wasn't Eddie's last funny movie, although it was probably the last real high point in his career. After Beverly Hills Cop 3 in the early 90s, he mostly starred in critically panned films (or ones with good reception but didn't make much money -- such as Bowfinger) and as a talking animal sidekick.
