My entire goal for my life was to get a high paying job where I wouldnt have to work a lot. Now that Im on rails to earning $90 an hour, I just dont know what to do with my life.

Pursue academia? Its the only thing I can think of that may make me happy. But all I hear is that academia mostly is shit to work in.

Thank you for once again proving that money does not provide happiness.
You just gotta ask yourself what makes you happy. I love watching tv with Mary Jane and maybe some video games along with it.
It's hard to top a morning with a cup of (cold) coffee and a bowl, then whatever I want. Books are also quite choice, they can make me sleepy though.

Haven't you "been on the rails" to being rich for about 8 years now? Is it ever going to happen for you?

Sometimes I wish I didn't had to worry about money. I mean, I don't want to be super rich just to be able to spend a lot, it's just that having a lot of money gets rid of the constant fear of messing up and having to say goodbye to my current lifestyle... which is kinda simple tbh. But then again I wonder... would I feel empty without that risk? Would life get boring (or rather, even more boring then what it is now)? For the sake of my own sanity, I like to think that's no the case. If I ever got to that point, I would enjoy the freedom of choice. I would put into practice all those projects that I don't have time to do now because of other obligations that wouldn't be there anymore. It doesn't need to be a big goal, just anything that looked like fun. Heck, even if it's just spending more time with my siblings - or even my whole family - would be enough.

Money indeed don't bring happiness. But in turn, it gives you the freedom to seek it without having to worry about stuff that gets in your way.

On rails has been about a year and a half. Likely to happen if I work hard has started three years ago.

80 hour weeks for the first 9 months then got burnt out and it went down to 40-50. The 80 included the number of hours a week for school and work which were basically combined. Its common for grad students to work that much, though unnecessary. And have you met medical people? So many can play an instrument because we had families with lessons. Not a whiz, just best in class or fastest progressing student. I mean, in college you have so much free time, use it to learn something.

Yeah, I lost the risk and it feels empty. I had the same initial feelings. Once I pass my boards I hope I dont completely fall out emotionally. Im sure Ill find other things by then and Im just adjusting now. Never thought itd happen.

Have a girlfriend.

Parents dont live nearby, low chance a job will open by then.

Other family is scattered.

I hang out with friends, theyr finally graduating and a few are staying here (for better or worse) so theyll have more free time again finally, since theyve been super busy with interviews and thesis defenses while Ive been busy with a newish girlfriend.

Yeah, its going to happen. I think traveling will get dull after a couple dozen trips, but well see.

Im hoping to invest a bunch and hit financial independence mid 40s or late 30s. It is one of my big goals now, but I feel that mainly involves waiting.

Combine them. Also crepes are better than either if done correctly.
