I've only played the 3DS version - liked it well enough when it worked, but it kept crashing for whatever reason (not sure if it's the 3DS version itself, or just the copy I rented)

Best kart racer in over a decade. I already had it, bought it on sale a couple years ago to see what all the commotion was about. Its praise is well earned.

Depends, if you just want a good kart racer and don't care about content (or like generic content) then it's fine.

If you think this is going to be great fanservice with lots of your favorite characters, stay FAR away, it only offers of the worst and/or most generic and least liked characters they could force in there, sadly, literally lower your standards to the levels of the likes of that one Crazy Taxi character nobody ever plays as, the generic karate guys from Virtua Fighter and random unfitting shoehorned in characters like Wreck it Ralph, then at least you'll hopefully not be too shocked over just how bad the roster actually is.

I'm not sure who you were hoping for, but most of the characters are certainly not "the worst and/or most generic and least liked characters they could force in there" as you put it. Games like these aren't just to provide a bit of fanservice to those familiar with the characters, but are also to help introduce players to characters and series that they may have never known of. Just because you don't know who the characters are or don't like them doesn't mean they are bad choices. Crazy Taxi, for example, is one of SEGA's most unique driving games, it makes perfect sense why a character from that would be in this game.
