I don't get why people act proud of the country they fled from. if they are waving mexican flags why did they leave? also it just shows a divide and lack of loyalty to their new nation and that makes americans distrust them. it spreads a bad message and actually hurts their cause

Is that actually a quote from him?

It feels like somebody took a Trump quote or a Clinton quote and applied it to Obama to see how it would change people's responses.

I get both sides. You can like where you live while still being proud of your cultural heritage. It doesn't mean they want Mexican laws or anything, they're just embracing who they are.

Conversely, I get the whole "you're American now" attitude, and that certain people may be rubbed the wrong way. I was largely raised around (European) immigrants so nobody cares, which indicates there's possibly some racial tension if people are only getting hot about Mexicans or something.

After getting our attention with that blunt description of his feelings, Obama goes on to argue against following those feelings as some people do, to justify denial of "rights and opportunities" to immigrants who want to become Americans.
