I believe Al stated he typically asked for a blessing of sorts from the original artists before going ahead with the parodies.

In this instance Al did not speak to Coolio beforehand. Someone at his label told him that they spoke to Coolio on his behalf and Coolio approved. Likely what happened is they knew Parody was protected, got a rejection from Coolio, and then lied about it to Weird Al.
