If you have Chief Hanlon kill himself by choosing to reveal his meddling, you can get his rare Ranger Sequoia pistol. I think the person who eventually comes in to see the scene will confiscate it, though, so you'll have to be quick about it!

Very well crafted quests in that game. I really like how every major faction (except maybe the Legion) falls under various shades of gray. You can pick who to side with based on your personal preferences as a person or how you want to RP your character.

Sadly the Legion was a victim of the ridiculously short development period they were given by Bethesda. They wanted to do a lot more with the Legion including showing how life is in lands already run by them rather than just the frontline war effort we did get.

Despite that it's still very impressive how much and the quality of the quests they did manage to get into the game.

you don't have to chop off your finger (not hand) to find shaun. there are two alternative methods--if you've done at least 3-4 trials successfully, you can piece it together, and if you've saved madison, she can tell you. it's also not the most horrible thing you have to do to save him--the following test makes you kill a person for real, and the final test makes you drink a fatal vial of poison.

heavy rain has a lot of nested 'if' statements in the plot.

The first Mass Effect had at least three tough choices.

There was the Rachni queen (wipe out a dangerous species or let it live), Ashley vs. Kaiden, and a few choices about the council at the end.

Also agree the earlier two games did a better job. I think 1 was the best written in this regard. It was too easy to save scum in 2 :\

Witcher 1 feels like a real world that you affect with a ton of little details based on what you do and the side as neutral dynamic

Personally I never felt the need to save scum in W2 and Roche path had such a compelling story line

Meanwhile sometimes W3 feels like the narration and stuff has an opinion of your morality. In W1 and W2 Geralt will reflect on the outcome of his decisions but not in a way that's like "yeah I fucked up" because they were complex decisions and that's the point.

Well, it's not that I felt *compelled* to save scum in Witcher 2 or 3. But the choices were blatantly in your face and the consequences usually almost immediate.

With Witcher 1 I felt like you could make a decision and only see the full consequence of that in a later act.

Oh that is totally true. Actions in W1 can have totally unintended consequences yet they don't ever feel unfair, you knew the implications. Honestly the fact that the gameplay and act pacing is an utter slog by today's standards yet the story still carries you to the end says a lot.

I guess I still feel like W2 did what it was doing well though, I never felt attacked by the game for my choices but I did in W3. Like sometimes it handed me a tough choice and once I made it the reflection cutscene was basically like "wow fuck you for picking that." I never ever felt that in the previous games.

You mean the ending of The Pitt?

Most of New Vegas' decisions reek of dissatisfying cynicism for every choice so it doesn't really matter what you pick as all decisions feel the same. Not to mention the DLC where you have what is essentially Chris Avellone's ghost stalking you.

sometimes not until the end of the game

i really, really enjoyed the writing of witcher 1. the only real flaw was the penultimate boss was kind of a random chance between "aard stuns him for an instakill" and "endless series of regular attacks required to even come close to hurting him"

Ah, that isn't 'most decisions' though.

In the core game most decisions have decent/good consequences. Heck, even the one cited in this topic originally has an interesting end if you let the man continue. He ends up going back to New California and challenging the political leadership there. In the meantime the Courier can continue to work away against the Legion.

Ulysses for his part is a jackass. Some players agree with some of what he says, but he's completely lost himself to said cynicism and is shortsighted because of it. It's best to just sweep him aside and continue forging a path to the future.
