We speculate that current assessments may have missed a substantial proportion of potential genotypes generated by on-target Cas9 cutting and repair, some of which may have potential pathogenic consequences following somatic editing of large populations of mitotically active cells, the authors of the study from the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom write in the paper published this week in Nature Biotechnology. Basically, past research may have missed lots of CRISPRs potentially harmful consequences.

Well, yeah.
If your added or removed base pairs don't end up to an exact multiple of three, you've fucked up the entire DNA strand after that point.

Or, if didn't seal your splice properly, you could easily create a ring chromosome by accident.

So in other words, minus the scary headline, they're uncovering flaws in the process that they need to correct before the technique is ready for human usage.

Cool. This is how science works.

I'm trying to be optimistic about this leading to cures for auto-immune diseases, but realistically I don't think that I'll live long enough to be cured.

Um, but humans are already using it. Didn't you see that John Oliver episode where the random guy at home is playing around with this thing and injecting himself?

That random guy needs too, if he seriously thinks that's a good idea.

It's not as big a deal as you think. The worst part is you just feel real itchy after. Tasty though. Itchy. Tasty.
