The person speaking to the, I guess, 'unusually gendered' person does need to try and make an effort to remember how said person likes to be gendered.
On the flip side The person being misgendered, assuming it's done accidentally, needs to stop freaking out and trying to destroy the person talking to them because they accidentally said "him" instead of "they." (Again I mean to emphasize this is the case if it's done on accident; if someone's intentionally being an asshole then it's obviously a different story) --- Not removing this until Pat Benatar is in Super Smash Bros. People on both sides are so narcissistic that they automatically assume anything they don't like is geared directly towards them.

far and away, most people who get misgendered do not correct the person misgendering them for fear of rejection, ridicule, or worse. so no, both sides dont need to take a step back, because one side in particular is in an incredibly vulnerable situation and the other side is just being rude :)
