Because it was about a poor black man moving to a lower-upper class house and becoming gentrified.

I'm joking, it's because the writing was fucking stellar and the cast unbelievable

this. sometimes "black sitcoms" (majority black cast) cater to a specific audience. TFPoBA didn't do that.

Also the character development was great. Like most shows, you saw them sort of devolve into caricature versions of themselves from season one, but it was done in a really good way, to the point where they were able to stand on their own. Carlton wasnt just the preppy guy. He had a fully developed identity.

Exactly.

It was very rare for 'race' to play a part in the show. Realistically, the cast could've been white and the show would've worked the same.

....black people?

Fresh Prince didn't solely mock white people, it took shots at black culture as well such as phil's activist friend who called him a sellout for working for the man rather than just destroying things and protesting and the fraternity that turned Calton away because he wasn't in their words "Black enough" for them and how Will's actions and attitude are portrayed as stupid and wrong most of the time hell Phil was a republican even if they didn't outright say it.

This. All the ones that flop and are subsequently blamed on "racism" or "sexism" for their flopping, generally were just awful in and of themself, and would've been seen as just as awful regardless of the races / sexes involved.

There's countless examples of shows and movies that prominently or even near-exclusively feature minorities out there, that have done well, because they were good. Something that those complaining that racism / sexim / etc are the reasons shows aren't succeeding, love to ignore.

Because it was mainly a show with black people in it, rather than a show about black people. A show that doesn't touch on minority issues and mainly focuses on the issues of being upper middle class is going to have a lot more white people sitting comfortably with it.

I don't really hold that against it in any way, but it's also not the "only way to do things" as some people will have you believe. There's a place for both approaches

Not that it didn't touch on such issues at times. I do recall an episode about the friction between police and black men.
