A third party watched the interaction and reported on it. You didnt, and then you made up an entirely different story for some reason.

But at least you feel right.

Did he report on what Musk told the guy who fetched the engineer? Nope.

Did he report on what the guy who fetched the engineer told the engineer? Nope.

Did he report on what the machine was doing that made Musk so angry? Nope.

Theoretically, whistles and emergency lights could been going off and the engineer is like "whatever could be the matter mr.musk!"

Conveniently, the reporter leaves these contextual details out.

Do you think none of these things matter?
What if the engineer was told exactly what Musk had an issue with by the person who fetched him? To you that detail is not important?

Your argument is "Consider all possible scenarios that could coexist with what we've been told. Are you trying to say the most Elon-favorable scenario among all of them ISN'T a justification for firing him?"

Like, do you even remotely believe any article that you read? You accuse the reporter of leaving those contextual details out, but that's more likely because they weren't noteworthy rather than that it would "ruin the narrative".

I have no narrative. I just pointing out for the op example, there is missing important context.

Rest of the article Musk does look very bad. I wouldn't work for him if excellence is just a baseline.

If he fires random people for answering questions wrong, ya he dumb. Just the op example could have not been that. But since his managers keep people away from him cause of that, it likely was the case.

At work, Musk sometimes seemed almost giddy, occasionally interrupting meetings to insist that his colleagues watch clips of Monty Python episodes on his computer, according to several people. A particular favorite was a skit of aristocrats debating the virtues of words like antelope versus sausage. He would play it more than once, laughing uproariously each time, as his colleagues waited to return to the issues at hand.

More concerning to executives were Musks low periods, particularly in the wake of his split from Amber Heard. In the weeks after the first Model 3 handovers, Musk occasionally didnt show up for meetings, or they would be canceled at the last minute, former employees say. Colleagues say they would call him on his cell phone in the morning, to make sure he had started the day. Musk gave bizarre interviews: He described being in severe emotional pain to a writer from Rolling Stone and then asked for dating advice. I will never be happy without having someone, he said. Going to sleep alone kills me.

In the months after the handover party, Musk seemed angrier than before, according to multiple people. It started to feel like every day you expected to be fired, said one executive who says he had three supervisors in three days. There was this constant feeling of dread.

Some managers feared that by taking on more prominent roles they increased their risk of termination or public humiliation. One former executive described Musk shaming her in front of colleagues. He was shouting that I didnt know what I was doing, that I was an idiot, that hes never worked with someone so incompetent, she told me. In a company with so many male employees, as a woman it was particularly humiliating, she said.
...
In May, Musk announced the companys latest earnings in a conference call. He made no effort at civility and no one held him back. When a Wall Street analyst asked Teslas chief financial officer about capital expenditures, Musk responded: Boring. Bonehead questions are not cool. Next? With the next question, he erupted again. These questions are so dry. Theyre killing me! and called upon a YouTube video blogger with an enormous enthusiasm for Tesla to ask questions for the next 20 minutes. (The companys stock price dropped more than 5 percent after the call.)

Come summer, news coverage of Tesla was lurching from disaster to disaster. For a long time, Elon would say or do something kind of wacky, and I would get up in front of my team and explain, this is why you shouldnt worry about it, said one executive who had been with Tesla for some years. But eventually it got to where I couldnt apologize anymore.

Rumors of Musks behavior made their way to potential hires. One story that numerous people recounted involved a candidate for a retail development position. When he came to his interview with Musk, he wore blue shoes. Musk turned to a colleague and said he didnt like the candidates shoes. The colleague explained the candidates qualifications. But Musk was unmoved; he rejected the candidate. (In a statement, a Tesla spokesperson said that Musk rejected the candidate because his experience wasnt right for Tesla, and the fact that Elon also mentioned in passing that he didnt like the candidates shoes had nothing at all to do with why he wasnt hired.)

The story, however, came to be seen as an example of Musks impulsiveness. After hearing about that, you stop recommending to friends they should apply, a former executive told me. You dont want to put friends through that.

Some of you are seriously overestimating the software that can drive the machines too.

I got to play with some software that drives a million dollar open bed CNC machine and it's garbage. During installation Windows warns that the installer is trying to replace important system files in system32. It's a DLL hell problem from Windows 3.1 days. It's pretty much a suite of programs cobbled together into one. The way the DRM hardware key is bizarre and the manufacturer has no idea how it works. The documentation has screenshots for Windows 2000 and has chapters dedicated to explaining the mouse and floppy disks. It doesn't mention the mouse wheel and so the software completely lacks mouse wheel support. It pops up frequent ActiveX errors. For desktop software purchased this year. It's just complete shit.

Narrative would imply I had political ties to Elon or alternative reasons for giving him the benefit of doubt. Some purpose or reason besides logic.
Like this shiny Telsa he just gifted me. Vroom vroom

Except I none of that exists. I was only arguing logic based on just the op quoted story.

It is political talk for framing a bias.

In particular I offered no story but cited a lack of one. I wasn't creating a narrative but saying we could not draw from what was presented a narrative.

That is, the story in the op creates a narrative. It also is intended to draw you to conclusion about Musk.

If I was making a counter narrative I would try to make him look good and cite people he helped etc. I didn't.

I mean, if my narrative is to say maybe we don't have all the facts umm ok? Not a correct assertion but it is benign and close to my intent.

That bias doesn't have to be based on anything that Elon Musk personally did for you though. Like your bias could just be that you're willing to be a bootlicker for anyone you perceive as being attacked by "the left". Or maybe you just like being a contrarian.

There isn't a lack of a story. They told a story. You just said "Hey I don't have details x,y,z and so I'm going to assume they were left out because they changed the narrative". But you explicitly created alternative narratives along the way. "Maybe alarms were going off", "Maybe the person who grabbed him told him exactly what Elon wanted but he still decided to be annoying", etc. Your lack of consistency in picking a narrative just says that you are trying to see what can stick, rather than being some statement about the endless possibilities that exist.

It paints a picture of Musk that tracks with the other details given in the story. There's support of the story in the form of other details. Also, your "we don't have all of the facts" is just a sliding scale. The idea that you're just a few details about the working of the machine away from believing this story is ridiculous.

Do you think this is out of character for Musk? What's the source of your belief that the story is fabricated?

CEOs have to be crazy to get to where they are. Not that that makes it right. In fact, it's suffocating and just plain old wrong most of the time.

It's pretty obvious Musk is being highly unreasonable. There shouldn't be anybody defending him, and there's no way a single mistake is worth firing at any point in anybody's life, unless that mistake cost the company millions of dollars singlehandedly.

Asking a reasonable question is obviously not that big of a deal. To say otherwise is what can only come from a place of fanboyism or delusion. People discuss, and that's how good things are born. Probably Tesla could reach even higher levels if the workplace isn't incredibly toxic and volatile.

Also, the guy went through a billion divorces and is featured on the media and open to endless scrutiny. I'm pretty sure it would make anybody go nuts. Humans aren't designed to deal with this kind of stuff, and Musk is just an example of a guy who's breaking down but barely hanging on to keep a company going. (That is to say, if that's his attitude, it's not a big mystery why nobody can stay married to him. The whole world is his enabler so what kind of lesson would he be expected to learn)

I don't think he's claiming that the story is false, just that there's a narrative being spun to present only the worst parts of Musk's behavior and make Musk look worse than he really is.

If I wrote a documentary about Steve Jobs and only covered things like how he stole Xerox's technology and tried to unfairly patent look and feel and fought tooth and nail against the right to repair and his terrible company PR in response to the problems with iphone models regarding camera and signal and such, and also that he believed in using homeopathy to treat cancer that's be a pretty inaccurate representation of Steve Jobs. He did all those things, but the story is fabrication by what's called "lying by omission"

I think a lot of these guys dont understand that communication includes a lot more than just the actual words being said. Body language, timing, tone, and other cues give us context for interactions, which we can either ignore or use at our discretion. That engineer was also presumably making more pay than a burger flipper at McDonalds, so I would like to think hed be smart enough to not provoke his boss beyond his already agitated state.
