I don't believe they've said it outright, but Patreon have implied in the past that many of their decisions have been due to pressure from Visa, MasterCard and PayPal. Unfortunately, due to new laws that were passed after said payment processors were already established, creating competing platforms is impossible. I don't really think this is even an issue about the principle of free speech. Like, patreon doesn't actually host things right? They're more like a crowdfunding service. Is the idea that people want them to be able to crowdfund anyone as long as it's legal? Or do people want patreon to have more of a clear line in the sand of what's allowed and what isn't allowed?
