On the upside, you will be able to video chat with him from time to time.
Did this with a buddy who was deployed to Afghanistan a little over a decade ago. We talked a few times a week. I did 6 years in the Air Force. I did 6 years to get the extra rank early...

I saw my brother off to the USMC years ago. He did 10 years. Got out maybe 4 years ago. With email, WhatsApp and Skype you can keep in pretty good contact these days.
