the dress change sequence brought in all the pre-teen boys, kept the ratings up.

sailor moon got a new attack every season and the first story where the others got a new attack every other season.

it did well because it was a fun show and the stock footage was how they got around their low budget. if they repeated the transformations every episode and repeated the attack animations they could save most of their budget for the more important episodes
it did well because it appealed to both boys and girls and had a good story and was basically a superhero show

It's been like twenty years and I still gag at the opening lines of Uranus and Neptune's theme.

The third season is so good. And a lot of that is because of the complexity the outer senshi introduce with their unwavering determination to kill the god of silence even if it meant killing an innocent if it meant preventing the apocalypse.

I haven't seen the new dub still. but I thought it was supposed to be better quality. the original dub changed people's names and censored lots of stuff

the classic DIC dub censored a lot
but it actually had a very good voice cast and its music changes were overall for the better
the new dub is good but its very straightforward and kind of boring
