It didn't begin that way. Social media gives them validation and emboldens them. They have always been little shits, but it's easier now to get teachers into trouble and easier to find peer echo chambers where anti-teacher attitudes are charged and empowered. Before social media, students had less ability to galvanize and less means to screw teachers over.

30 kids being taught in a classroom is pretty outdated and proven to not be beneficial to all students. this old style of teaching goes back to where settlers were teaching the Natives how to read in English and be good Christians.

maybe it's time for the classroom and curriculum to evolve with the times as well? a lot of tenured teachers been using the same syllabus since their rookie year.

They literally assaulted and harmed a teacher, this is not kids being dumb this is kids attacking a teacher and doing physical harm.

I dont know if the teacher did something to provoke them but the teacher should have defended himself. Dont retreat or scurry off like that leaving yourself open to attack, knock those fucking little shits the fuck out. Two against one is always dangerous but especially so when both will attack you.

What are you even talking about. By having non-educated youth theyre gonna be left to doing things that are off the books, which are likey to be shady. They wont have the tools to work and will be a strain on resources. You should want to educate the public

There's no need to get defensive. In this very topic, people are trying to subtly attribute two kids fighting to some sort of issue with the black community and how we raise our children. Now most are trolling, but their opinions are not uncommon.

Yet racist acts committed by children in school, when non one is physically harmed, are not analyzed on a macro level. It's usually just waved off as "kids being kids" I'm asking why that is. I wasnt trying to say that's what you're doing

30 kids with 1 adult is definitely too many. IMO 20 should be MAX.

but lol at the second part. Districts change curriculum constantly. No tenured teacher is using the same curriculum from when they started.

you gotta see the point I was making with that obvious exaggeration, though. how many generations of To Kill a Mockingbird? how many generations gloss over key parts of the Civil War in favor of fast forwarding to cherry picked MLK? teachers and lessons haven't changed much throughout the generations.

so whats the story behind all this?

2 vs 1 and at least 1 more person supporting the confrontation. in order to de-escalate the confrontation this teacher tries to put distance between aggressive student. teacher then turns his back and gets sucker punched which causes him to fall down. vocal laughs in classroom while others fear for their safety and slowly move away from the area.

what provoked such an incident where violence was needed

wtf at some replies - cameras and guards?? they screen students at some schools already for contraband. now they want constant surveillance of schools grounds? folks here wanting security are basically turning an academic location into a prison.

I taught at an urban school as well and I was not assaulted but one student did try intimidate me into a fight, gotta learn how to defuse.

Note im not blaming the teacher for the incident nor saying teacher deserved it. The students should be charged with commiting assault.

People from all races are doing this type of stuff.

There is a reason things used to be much more strict, this is what happens when you loosen the caller and tell Americas youth over and over that everyone else is privileged and it's the systems fault and nobody who is rich worked for it blah blah blah.

Add that to the additional dysfunction going on in the family lives of many people (some areas of the population have like a 60% single motherhood rate and it's bad across the board tbqh) in poverty stricken areas, and this is the result.

Not sure what to do about it. Probably start trying to make our towns and cities nicer instead of building a border wall.

It did when I was able to reach out to a student who was quick to turn toward violence. I defused the situation with him and was able to reach him better by switching him to a period away from other tough guys.

Many of these kids have trauma and its harder to reach them.

Try rural high schools. This was a decade ago but we had someone spray paint a swastika on a Jewish teacher's car during the school day. Not to mention the amount of shit I heard talked about the all of one black kid in my graduating class, out of the 3 in the entire HS.

Basically you're right, it's not a problem restrictive to any group or where the school is located

I wish i could give a straight forward answer, but I started teaching in 2012 so I don't know how things were handled before Obama.

What I can share is how frustrating it was to have administrators ignore, or even reprimand me, for writing up students. Their skin color didn't matter to them, we just needed to keep our suspension rates low, or so I was told at staff meeting. The issue at some schools was that our student population was heavily African American, so they were more often referred for discipline because they were the majority. It has nothing to do with skin color in my experience, I've seen rotten kids from all sides of the racial spectrum.
