Should I be using a map? Is this like that crap game Legend of Zelda that is nigh impossible without using something not in the game?

I've just been doing trial and error for the past 2 hours and I'm making progress, but it's starting to be a bit of a slog hitting dead ends. I got a power up I don't even know what it was.

Metroid is honestly a bad game. I have fun playing LoZ even though there are dumb things that Nintendo tried to use to sell their magazine and hotline.

Metroid on the other hand is atrocious, even with a map. Controls are awkward, dying is one of the biggest pains in gaming, a lot of glitchy stuff, just a bad game. Honestly, even for a game in the 80's, I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole.

But yeah, if you are going to go ahead and beat it, just use a map, game doesn't deserve your full effort.

I grew up with an NES, but Metroid's always been one of the classics I just never got to play. I still enjoy retro games a bunch, but stuff like LoZ is just way too time consuming to play straight up. This doesn't seem nearly as bad, but I might resort to a walkthrough if it means enjoying the game more.

I played it all the way through about a decade ago. Pain in the ass without creating a map as you go along. And you will hit parts that will require you to look up how to progress. Not quite as bad as Castlevania II and kneeling in front of a wall levels of How the fuck should I know that?, but close.

Alright I'll use a map for starters. Try to avoid a guide.

Does it get better with Metroid II? That'll be next before I get to Super Metroid which I'm assuming will be like the LttP of the series where it gets really good.

Id say Metroid II is a step backwards, but its to be expected going from NES to Game Boy. Youre very zoomed into the action, and Samus takes up a much larger chunk of the screen (see below). And since you dont have colors to differentiate locations, it can be trickier to recognize where you are.

Its a very good Game Boy game, but not a step forward in the series IMO. Either a parallel step of a backwards step.

The only thing the NES Metroid really has going for it is the atmosphere. It's the only Metroid game where I feel like I'm playing in a genuine alien world. Kraid's Lair is probably the best example of that, with the music being creepy as hell (below) and and the world looking extraterrestrial. Zero Mission butchers that track.

In Zero Mission and Super Metroid, all the stages just look like underground caves, which doesn't evoke the same feeling.

Super agreement. There are some flaws in design that I think people sweep under the rug of "well, for its time..." when other games found ways to work around these flaws or just not have them in the first place.

I have a certain hatred for the original Zelda. People go on and on about how great it was and what an impact it made and while it deserves a ton of praise for its influence, the game itself is just not very good at all. The combat's bleh, but fine. I've played much worse from the era. But the real problem is the map and hints. They are atrocious. Not flawed, straight up terrible. The game came with a physical map, but if you didn't have that, you were pretty much fucked. People bragging about beating the game without any help are either liars or wasted hours upon hours on mindless searching. It was the finding the dungeon where you had to burn 1 random bush out of dozens and dozens that broke me. There were clues to make that bush stand out. There are no hints in the game that give you anywhere close to enough info to figure it out. It might as well be dumb luck. I hate it.

There's my mini rant. And a lot of my hate does come from me trying to beat it without a map or a walkthrough at all.

Tbf the original Zelda wasnt meant to be played in a vacuum. There was a meta element that most games today dont indulge.

And on the flip side, Im absolutely terrible at finding secrets in almost any video game, and i found that bush dungeon on accident while I was still looking for Level 2 >_>

Wow is Metroid II better across the board. Still have to use an online map, but I can make a good amount of progress on my own with a little exploration. Power ups are at least labeled even though they don't teach you how to use them, so I had to look up what to do for the spider ball, but it's something. On top of that this is the best looking Game Boy game I've ever seen by a country mile.

I'd say ZM does a great job of updating the game's look while still having a similar atmosphere

the white brick walls in Kraid's lair
the pipes in Tourian

it's all there
