It's often the other way around. More than once I've taken over as lead on a project because the "lead" was incompetent or lacked leadership ability.

It depends on what's classified as smarter. I have had bosses that were more knowledgeable in regards to our field than I was, but I had more knowledge about other things or all around knowledge.

Expect one boss I had. He looked just like Kevin Smith from Clerks. I swore the guy was a borderline genius because it felt like he knew everything

No. She's not dumb or anything, but she's been with the company longer, hence she's my manager. I like her a lot though, so it's all good.

I have two, the head manager and assistant.

Assistant manager is alright, but I feel like after not knowing much about wines and spirits when I started, 1.5 years later I do.

However the head manager has 100x more knowledge than I could even hope to obtain, so.

my previous manager... I don't have a lot good to say

my current manager is maybe not "smarter" than me, but he's better than me in a lot more ways than that

Yes. My manager is not an engineer but he has over 30-40 years of experience over me in our line of work and though certain things he may not be able to explain/justify via numbers, he will know from experience whether or not certain things can work.

Is he a sommelier or trained in it?

No. She's not a bad person but she doesn't listen to me when I tell her important things like 'if I do the vacuum now we will get a bunch more leaf litter and I will need to do it again before the night is over'. Or 'the garbage compactor isn't working. Since you told me to stop using the dumpsters this means I cannot do the garbage tonight.'

At most of my jobs I would say definitely not, but I have competent managers at my current job instead of bumbling idiots

My principal is nice, but she's very inexperienced and often inadvertently steps on our toes as teachers.

I wouldn't say I'm smarter than her, though. As an outside observer, I can just more easily see her mistakes and flaws than she can. We get along just fine.

She even approached me a while ago encouraging me to consider getting a master's degree and joining administration.

Now I am curious as to what line of work do you folks do where your manager is smarter or not compared to you. At least within the STEM field, I'd imagine most managers would be smarter/more experienced than those they manage over.

In my case, my manager does have a lot of experience but he would still yield to the more experienced engineers even though those engineers are under his management.
