Fair enough, all I did was google "declawing cats" and grabbed the first link.

That said, every other source I saw said the same thing, so I see no reason to not trust them.

Medical drawbacks to declawing include pain in the paw, infection, tissue necrosis (tissue death), lameness, and back pain. Removing claws changes the way a cat's foot meets the ground and can cause pain similar to wearing an uncomfortable pair of shoes. There can also be a regrowth of improperly removed claws, nerve damage, and bone spurs.

For several days after surgery, shredded newspaper is typically used in the litter box to prevent litter from irritating declawed feet. This unfamiliar litter substitute, accompanied by pain when scratching in the box, may lead cats to stop using the litter box. Some cats may become biters because they no longer have their claws for defense.

Just gently bring up the actual procedure and discuss why so many people are against it, try to get them to understand how fucked up it is.

Cats are surprisingly easy to train, especially kittens.

not to mention that many cats actively enjoy having their claws trimmed, and you can use a regular nail clipper

as others have said just politely explain to your co worker the issues with doing this

as it is a very inhumane thing to do to a cat and then guide them to ways to train there kitty to not scratch things up

I'll probably talk to him tomorrow. I'm not the type to jump onto someone, and we get along well, so I think I can just discuss the issues with him. He probably just isn't aware of the problems it can have.

nevermind, i didn't know cats have nerves under their nails, you shouldn't declaw them. this post has been edited.

also, cats are very likely to get pregnant in the wild. this is why it's important to spay and neuter cats that you keep at home.

Im sorry but it really doesnt matter what you think. Its their cat and if they think its the best thing to do then good for them. And honestly you shouldnt be caring what people are doing when it literally does not hurt you or affect you in any way.

Ignoring your call for people to shed all of their human empathy, its already been proven ITT that not everyone knows how cruel and inhumane declawing is. So hopefully TCs coworker just isnt aware and will change his mind once he learns.

Just have an honest discussion with him. Let him know the drawbacks, and that it's actually being outlawed in many locations because it's a cruel practice. Then suggest that he get some scratching posts, and every time the cat scratches something they're not supposed to, take them over to the scratching post

Honestly, the sooner this barbaric practice is completely outlawed, the better

Cats are actually pretty easy to train certain behaviors. I trained furniture scratching out of my younger cat and even taught my older kitty to do high fives

Some cats are easier than others, mine was as simple as buying a scratching board and put it in the center of the carpet. He started using it right away, and doesn't touch the carpet anymore.

Even if it doesn't work right away, theres lots of steps to take before mutilation should even be considered.

My cats scratch the shit out of things they're not supposed to and they have multiple scratching posts and get their nails cut regularly. Please don't speak on things you know nothing about.

I know plenty about it though. I have two cats. They don't destroy furniture, because they're actually properly cared for. It isn't just scratching posts but actually keeping them entertained and training them.

I've had 6 cats in my life and never had furniture ruined at all. I did have one cat that liked to chew wires though
