Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon.

Fun stories, great combat, entertaining characters, introduced weapon and combat styles. Deathtraps. Reinvigorated level transitions. Introduced the Krypt and alternate game modes. (Puzzle Kombat, Chess, Racing etc)

Deception's Konquest mode was fantastic and they never did anything like it again

Sure Armageddon had no bios, weak endings and a lame fatality system (Kreate a fatality was fine but characters should have still had unique ones) but you gotta love that roster size AND kharacter kreation.

Plus the intro movies were fantastic. All 3 of the made me wish the guys making the games got to make an animated feature.

People act like only the original 2D ones were good and new games only go for 2D game nostaglia pops but the 3D ones were great.

Even Shalion Monks was fun so long as you play co-op and ignore the cutscenes.

Konquest in Deception was definitely worth the price if you were into all the subtle and lesser known MK lore (inside and outside the games)

Armageddon was meh

Armageddon adding all the characters was a +1

Removing fatalities was definitely a -1000

Agreed. Too bad most of the fan base seems to hate everything that happened outside the 90s. I would love so much for Havik to be playable again.

Deception and Deadly Alliance yes.
Armageddon was phoned in trash. Only thing it had going for it was having all the characters. If they put a little effort into it, it would have been that Era's MK Trilogy.

Me and my best friend just plowed through Shaolin Monks one weekend in high school and loved it.

We were super disappointed to find out that they had a Scoprion/Sub Zero one planned that was cancelled since I'm a Scoprion guy and he's a Sub Zero guy.

Story I got told was that it was rushed out because for some reason the marketing guys wanted it out before the PS3 came out. Which was a crazy deadline.

And so basically all the development time went into making sure it was in playable state rather than adding content.

That's why there's a ton of stuff in the early trailers for the game that weren't in the finished product. They just got dropped.

Interesting, do you remember any specifics of this? I have no recollection of that.

Deception was so kool, I loved that it was such a dark game, had a lot of kontent, and the modes were all great. Konquest mode was fantastic, especially for a lore nerd like myself

Oh fuck me you're putting me on the spot.

Honestly I don't remember. I just remember seeing the beta footage at the time and then when the game came out a lot of stuff just wasn't in there.

I mispoke when i said "Trailers" I meant beta-gameplay footage. At conventions and stuff.

I think they showed unique fatalities, the Konquest mode was different. Had a different Gui, Taven had a bow, the levels/puzzles they showed weren't in the game. There were some fighting stages that weren't in the game. It seems like it was envisioned with more RPG elements than it ended up with.

I mean the sheer fact they wrote a bio/plot for every character and put it on their website but not in the damn game demonstrates they were rushing

While they did well with the fighting engine with Deadly Alliance, there was a lot of disappointment from MK fans due to lame fatalities, only one fatalities, and mostly filler crud in the Krypt. That's the reason why they went gung-ho with secrets in Deception.

Haha, sorry to put you on the spot! Im really impressed with your memory (assuming that stuff is accurate). It would have been interesting to see Armageddon done justice.

That said, I really enjoyed MKA myself, albeit not as much as Deception. The shortcomings were clear, but I still had oodles of fun with the massive roster, not to mention creating my own characters. I really loved that.

I really liked them but was disappointed that they reduced the fighting styles from Deadly Alliance.

I wish they would do more stand alone games like Mythology but with the solid game play of Shaolin Monks.

IIRC this was the plan before Midway collapsed.

They were going to do spin off style games like Shaolin Monks between main games.

It was indeed.

The plan was for Mythologies to be a series. That's why the first one was called "Sub-Zero"

But then it flopped and Special Forces flopped.

Special Forces was a train wreck in development. Ed Boon once said he could write a book about. Ed Tobais and half the dev team left in mid production then it was hastily slapped together. Originally was also planned for the N64 and include Sonya Blade and several levels were dropped. In fact the back of the game was never changed and states 8 levels although there are only 5.
