Terry or Banjo came to mind simultaneously. Someone who is relatively new to Smash (even nobodies in Melee/Brawl have had time to build some fanbase / meme value) and isn't part of a series GameFAQs even moderately cares about (so no Pokemon or Fire Emblem, etc.). Though leafing through contest history Banjo did apparently finish just ahead of Olimar, so obviously my guesses weren't the best! Alph if he counts is a great choice. Miis are probably correct though, I can't see them having much of a fanbase and they'd probably get some antivotes.

Edit: I just checked the '08 x-stats, and Nana finished ahead of Olimar and Lucas. Weird.

Below a certain point in the fodder zone, I think "being female" helps a character out, in terms of standing out from a mostly-male crowd like the Smash roster. You see the same thing in the huge Fire Emblem character polls with hundreds of characters, once you get down very near the bottom it's almost all dudes. So I'd expect Nana to be slightly stronger than Popo at minimum, and being ahead of those two doesn't stun me either.

My idea here is a contest framed in such a way that as many voters as possible are voting for the character they prefer specifically on the basis of Smash, which explains the seeds. Most of the characters facing off in wildcards should be pretty self-explanatory - there's a lot of full clones, a few semi-clones, and some transformations/alter-egos/characters who share(d) the same roster spot. If I'm not mistaken, the Arms character will be announced and released very soon. In that case, I think the best way to make room will be to force Marth, Roy, Lucina, and Chrom into a fatal fourway match.

swordfighter would probably win the match though, and as far as nominating the miis we would probably have to either come to the consensus on whether or not they first appeared in Wii Sports and were given weapons in Smash or if they first appeared in their current, separate incarnations in Smash 4

I dont know if the stats were talking about account for this, but Lucas was in an SFF situation with Kirby so he may be better than that would suggest. Nana was the only remotely Nintendo character in her match so she maybe overperformed a bit by standing out.

Getting the Samus costume would probably be the biggest help to Gunner.

Unfortunately, Swordfighter can get the Link costume.

He did alright all things considered before he was in Smash, not being too far off from Amaterasu. He was probably a fine bit better than the worst Smash characters before getting in himself, so while he's worth little I'd say contest wise it's still enough to not be near the bottom.
