9. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders (OP2) - Pirateking2000
https://youtu.be/odH6449XmKA

Unique: 9.25
Story: 6.25
Music: 9
Animation: 8.75
Personal: 7.5
Average: 8.15

This was one of the most interesting intros on the list, and it actually took me a few viewings to really appreciate what I was watching (liking it more each time). My take on this intro is its an action anime presented as rock opera. This is probably most apparent from the way the character dramatically sings soul platinum at about 0:45, during which I could easily imagine someone on a stage singing the line before an audience. And while on the subject of the fantastic theme song, I cant get enough of the segment from around 0:33 to 0:38, which is easily my favorite part.

But the operatic tone is only one of several things that make this such a unique intro. Theres also the way the flow of the intro is unexpectedly halted near the end by the character (my apologies for not knowing the names of any of these characters) throwing a screen shattering punch. Then in complete silence, the hero and villain take their places with their backs to each other as if just before a duel. And after building the tension and anticipation, the characters suddenly launch into a crazy battle with the kind of animation Dragon Ball Z always wanted to do, but could never quite pull off.

The distinctive animation style throughout the entire intro also enhances the Unique score. The sequence in the desert starting at around 0:16 is a great example of the high quality of the animation, which is surprisingly easy to follow despite how quickly it keeps moving.

Story is the one factor where this intro lags a bit. While I got a sense of whats going on, I cant say I followed the plot in a meaningful way (probably because its aimed at those who have watched the show). Still the intro does such a good job of conveying a sense of drama and mood that its enough to warrant a respectable score for Story.

This intro was exactly what I was hoping for with this topic, something I had never seen before, but really enjoyed.

Surprised to see my Game of Thrones drop before Dexter of all things! The Dyson Sphere/gyroscope actually describes the recent history of the show's fantasy setting, using animal sigils to represent the great houses - the Dragon desecrating the lands; the Wolf, Stag, and Lion bringing down the Dragon; finally all the animals bowing before the Stag.

Very excited to see the top 10 play out (well, top 8 now)

8. Attack on Titan (season 2) - Great_Paul

Unique: 6.75
Story: 7.5

Animation: 8.5
Personal: 9
Average: 8.15

This is one of the most intense and epic intros on the list. One major reason for that is the powerful theme song, which gives you this sense of constantly being on the verge of some legendary battle. While I am normally remiss to quote (or even read) a YouTube comment, I happened to notice a great one, where someone remarked that this song makes you feel patriotic for a nation that doesnt exist. And Im inclined to agree with that sentiment.

Although the intro provides hardly any sense of the personalities of the individual characters distinct from their will to fight, there is a strong story here based on how much the intro tells us about the world these characters inhabit. It is a horrifying world in which humans are like insects beneath the grotesque Titans. This is nicely shown near the start with the unique perspective of the humans huddled together at the bottom, with the background of the Titans taking up most of the screen. And in one of the best moments of the intro, we see all the humans descending from the top of a wall like tiny dots to battle the Titans on the other side.

Another thing I find interesting about the intro are the glowing dots within the chest of each of the humans (at around 0:54), which we also see inside the rampaging beasts near the end. This suggests some spark of life or humanity, making it all the more intriguing that we see it inside some of the monstrous creatures. Also the distortion of colors near the end of the intro leading into mostly black and white as the beasts charge makes for a very unique segment. The only reason I couldnt go higher with the Unique score is that some parts of the intro showing the human characters are on the conventional side.

As for the Animation score, it is slightly held back by the periodic use of still or nearly still moments (although even those have a lot of details). However, the battle running from about 1:04 to 1:12 is one of the most beautifully animated sequences Ive ever seen in anything, let alone an intro. Battle scenes in intros all too often tend to be dull, but you can barely even take a breath during this one. If the entire intro looked like that, Id have to give it a 10 for Animation.

Quite simply, this is one of the greatest anime intros of all time.

Wow, this intro is beautiful. At times I could hardly tell if I was looking at an actual photograph or a painting. The visuals seamlessly blend together the gritty city landscape and a surreal dreamworld. And I cant recall ever having seen an intro that looks like this.

While its certainly open to interpretation, I feel the story theyre going for here is this is all the perspective of Jessica Jones, how she sees the world around her. Thats a really interesting way to get inside a character's head and give you a good idea what her character is all about. Theres also a kind of Rear Window vibe going on here where you get the sense Jessica is closely watching all these lives unfolding around her. And the intro cleverly ends with the window of a building she is spying on transforming into her eye staring fixated, which was probably my favorite part of the entire sequence.

The theme song is astonishingly good, starting with a moody jazz vibe, and then building dramatically to rock. I particularly enjoyed the transformative segment starting at around 0:36, which was one of the coolest things Ive ever heard from a theme song to a TV show.

Id say this intro is one of the rare few that could be considered art.

While this is slightly less innovative than the intro for Jessica Jones, its still got an extremely unique look and Im an even bigger fan (in fact, this is one of my personal top 10 intros). The striking visual of everything being formed by blood, down to the buildings that make up New York City, is some of the most memorable and interesting imagery in any intro. And it tells the story that the City, much like Daredevil himself, were born from blood and tragedy. Of course, the intro is a bit light on story, but theres plenty of hints in the imagery (such as the blindfolded statue of Lady Justice), to say nothing of the strong atmosphere the intro conveys.

I adore the theme song, which really enhances the gloomy mood, while simultaneously lending a sense of energy that might seem at odds with the morose tone. Its the perfect setup to a show that is all about constantly fighting despite suffering loss. And the visual effects look amazing, particularly the way objects gradually come into view as the blood slowly flows.

I feel like I should have more to say for this one because its one of my favorite intros, but I think its the simplicity of the concept that works so well here.

5. Dexter - Player_0

As far as Im aware, there is no other intro remotely like this. The sequence makes you feel youre watching a series of brutal and at times grotesque killings when the reality is youre watching close-up shots filmed from an unusual perspective of things that are perfectly ordinary like shaving and making breakfast. And that is what makes this intro so special, its ability to take the mundane and make it seem unsettling, if not downright horrifying. The fact that I found myself getting squeamish just watching him cut the flesh of an orange is something no other intro can do.

Theres a strong sense of story here to the way we see everything from Dexters point of view, from the perspective of a killer. And I like the nice little touch at the end of how he just casually grins at the camera like hes an ordinary guy. Without spelling anything out for the viewer, the intro tells us everything we need to know about his character.

The music mostly blends into the background, but it does a fantastic job of setting the tone. Its simultaneously got a feel of being playful and sinister. And for whatever reason, Im getting vibes of Hans Zimmers score to the Sherlock Holmes movies, which just makes me like it more.

Quite simply, this is a brazenly unnerving intro that doesnt pull any punches, and is difficult to forget long after youve seen it.

All the windows in JJ's opening are a reference to the fact that she's a PI, so she is constantly spying on people. I love the touches of one of the windows lighting up (a reference to the superhuman/inhuman surge in the MCU post-Agents of SHIELD) and the two people shown right after that are Luke Cage and Matt Murdock. There's also several shots alluding to infidelity/spousal abuse/rape (important given Jessica's history) and of course, the title card breaking Jessica's name, showing how broken she is (and how easily she can break things). Love that intro.

As a nice touch to the Dexter intro; showcasing all the ways one can kill someone! Smashing/splatting, slitting, cutting, breaking/crushing, slicing, grinding, asphyxiation,... It's such a cool intro.

4. Batman: The Animated Series - Xeybozn

Unique: 6.5
Story: 9
Music: 10
Animation: 8.5

Average: 8.8

Sometimes less is more, which is something the creators of this intro understood completely. We dont see any of Batmans rogues gallery. We dont see a retelling for the millionth time of Batmans origin. We dont see any clips from episodes. What we do see is Batman stripped down to the bare essentials. The iconic Batmobile, the way Batman fills the criminals with fear, how effectively he dispatches the bad guys, and at the end, Batman looking out over his city from the darkness, visibly only for the fleeting moment a lightning bolt strikes. That may not seem like much, but really it tells us everything we need to know about Batman. And despite its brevity, this intro functions as a complete story, not solely in the literal sense of Batman catching the crooks, but also in the grander scale of Batman as an iconic legend (which I believe someone could take away from this sequence even if they had somehow never heard of Batman before).

The animation is consistently fantastic, with such a high focus on quality that they even seamlessly transitioned the Warner Brothers logo at the start into a blimp. But its not just the attention to detail that comes through in everything down to the shards of glass in the explosion. Its also the little things like the way Batmans personality comes across in that eye squint. The animation also makes excellent use of lighting and shadows to enhance the sense of story, such as that beautiful moment when you see the dark silhouettes of the characters fighting with the moon as a backdrop. This intro looked amazing when this series first premiered, and it still looks amazing to this day.

But my favorite aspect of the intro has to be the theme song. In fact, I would go so far as to say if there is such a thing as a perfect theme song, this is it. Its iconic, it captures the essence of Batman, and its timed flawlessly to coincide with every moment of the intro and bring out the maximum impact. Just listen to the way the mood of the song changes dramatically from the scene with the crooks in front of the bank to the explosion, and then how it changes again when you see the Batmobile racing to the scene, to say nothing of the music when Batman first appears. And although its easy to miss how subtly the music affects your perception, something like a cymbal hit is even critically timed at moments to coincide with a punch. The intro would still look great regardless, but the score gives it that added magic that makes it all come together.

I could go on and on praising this intro, but honestly this one is so amazing it speaks for itself.

3. Castlevania - Murphiroth

Unique: 8.5
Story: 9
Music: 9
Animation: 9.5

This entry proves an intro has the potential to be a work of art. As I watched it the first time, I was already impressed by the first half of the intro, but the second half is where it truly becomes stunning. The distinctive and unusual animation style looks somehow both unfinished and polished all at once, almost as if its being drawn while youre watching it. The only thing I can think of that this vaguely reminds me of is the music video for a-has Take on Me, although the two otherwise have little to nothing in common.

Further enhancing the artistic value of the intro is the beautiful and dramatic orchestral score (which kind of reminds me of Hans Zimmers score for Batman Begins). The Music score is also benefited by the way the intensity of the song magnifies at just the right moment when everything goes red and wild.

Theres also a very strong sense of story. The first half seems to tell a story of the brutality of mob justice and those who have to hide from it. The burning of an innocent woman who turns to ashes within Draculas hand then leads into an explosion of rage, revealing his obvious love for the woman. And in the second part of the intro, we see fleeting images of the ensuing struggle in the swirling chaos. Although the intro never spells out the story, trusting the viewer to fill in the gaps, youre left with a stronger sense of the shows atmosphere and tone than you get from intros with bland exposition.

And while I cant say I enjoyed the show nearly as much as the intro, I can say this fantastic intro made me try watching it!

2. Paranoia Agent - Johnbobb

Animation: 8

Average: 9.05

This intro blew my mind the first time I saw it (which was before I decided to do these rankings), to say nothing of the brilliant mindfuck of a series that goes with it. Its horrifying without any hint of horror and unsettlingly beautiful. And it almost defies description, let alone scoring with traditional factors, but that is what Im attempting to do.

Lets start with the obvious, this intro is exceedingly unique, perhaps more so than any other intro. We see a series of characters standing before various backgrounds ranging from the mundane (such as a garbage dump) to the fantastic (falling from the sky). And the one thing each of them has in common is they are all laughing hysterically as if theyve lost all control over themselves. Stranger still, we get a kind of ghostly image of each character projected before them when they first appear. And just when you think youre starting to get the idea, it really starts getting weird with a character laughing before an enormous mushroom cloud, later followed by a character standing on the Moon, laughing away as explosions can be seen all over the Earth in the background. And thats not even getting started on the music!

The theme song is epic and almost cathartic in its power, but when you stop to listen to the lyrics such as a magnificent mushroom cloud in the sky, or how exhilarating the song gets at the moment of displaying that mushroom cloud, its also kind of disturbing. One thing I particularly love about the music on this intro is how well its timed with the visuals, where at exact rhythmic points in the song we get a shift to the next character. And despite how bizarre the song is, its also super catchy.

The animation was tough to score. On the one hand, much of what we see are pictures of characters who are still aside from their laughter in front of often static backgrounds (although those backgrounds are impressively detailed). On the other hand, there are some fantastic visual effects at play in this intro, most notably the way people and traffic speed by during the segment where the characters stand laughing in the middle of the street. Also, the ghostly image I mentioned earlier for each of the characters is an extremely effective technique that, at least to me, gives these otherwise normal looking characters a haunting and disturbing quality even apart from the bizarre laughter. All in all, the animation strikes me as excellent and is a big part of what makes this such a memorable intro.

But the hardest factor of all to score was Story. As a general rule, I tend to look down on intros that tell us nothing about the characters. But theres an exception to every rule. Although this intro never gives us so much as a hint of a single characters personality and barely alludes to the plot, theres a surprising amount of story here. In fact, if you stop to analyze it, you can go pretty far down the rabbit hole trying to derive the meaning of this intro.

Without spoiling anything about this series, my take on the intro, viewed in isolation, is these are characters who have completely lost touch with the world around them. They are oblivious to it, laughing away as the world moves on around them and even as the world burns. But theres much more than that. Theres also the hint, particularly with the first character standing on the edge of a tall building, that these are characters who despite their incessant laughter are not filled with joy, but just the opposite.

And there are subtle connections between some of the characters. For instance, after it starts to rain in the first scene, the rain continues into the second scene with the two children, as if to suggest the woman on the building has an impact on the children. Likewise, after a massive wave of water washes over the children, the next character appears underwater. Its more difficult to find connections of that type in the scenes that follow, but I suspect they are there.

I could probably write a lengthy essay just discussing this intro, but Ive got to wrap this up. Quite simply, this is one of the most brilliant intros in existence.

It definitely leans heavy into the gore at times but I think the worst of it is early on in S1 with Dracula's army attacking the town and the aftermath. There are spots of it here and there throughout the rest of the show for sure but to my memory that's definitely the worst bit.

S2 has the best of the Trevor/Sypha/Alucard dynamic which is probably my favorite part of the show.

This may seem like an unexpected choice for first place, but if you watch it a few times, it should become clear why it was chosen. It excels in every aspect I have considered that it takes to make a great intro.

Lets start with the extremely unique visual style. People and at times objects are used like movie screens to superimpose imagery onto them so that youre hardly ever looking at a character or place in isolation, but rather some complex hybrid that forces you to see, for instance, a character in a different light. And although this visual theme prevails throughout the entire intro, it is constantly used in new and clever ways, avoiding the trap that so many intros do of taking a great visual gimmick and running it into the ground.

On the subject of the visual style, I struggled to decide whether to score this one on Animation. Clearly the characters we see are live actors, with actual photographs of locations. But this intro falls into that exceptionally rare situation where the CGI is so heavily integrated with the presentation that its an essential component of the intro. And it would be doing this intro a great injustice not to consider the beautiful imagery created here, such as the bizarre telephone with a face or the way a body ripples like water. Its almost impossible to tell where real life ends and the visual effects begin.

Theres also a lot of story to this intro, although it is told entirely through imagery and symbolism, without any exposition. On the one hand, you couldnt possibly comprehend the plot from this sequence without having watched the show (and even then it takes some work to truly understand). On the other hand, the sequence does such an outstanding job of establishing the tone that you are left with a sense of understanding, even if you can barely put it into words. Theres plenty of imagery here of the bleak location, the desperate faith of those in the community for something better, and something horrifying beneath the surface (if you look closely, you can even see what looks like a monster starting at around 0:54). I also love the way they convey the personality of Woody Harrlesons character with the imagery cast on his face, particularly starting at around 1:18.

I couldnt possibly imagine a better theme song for this sequence, which so effectively enhances the intended mood. To me, this song conveys the struggle to hold onto what makes us human and keep going in a world of shit. It is both melancholy and uplifting all at once. The music is also timed perfectly with the visuals, as evidenced by moments such as starting at 0:31.

This intro is nothing short of a work of art, and I could watch it over and over. It proves an intro isnt just an introduction to a TV show, but a part of the show that isnt to be skipped. Because if you do, you might miss something special.

I like this idea in theory. But the intros to so many movies are basically just credits, and theres rarely much attempt to do something thematically interesting like with TV intros.

But if it was limited to the very opening scene before credits, that could be interesting.

Man, True Detective season 3 is tough to remember, too. I'm usually better with my memory than this.

Edit: Never watched an episode of Black Sails but family did, and the first notes of the intro hit me with recognition. So my nostalgia brain bombs still go off okay. Hmm.

I feel like you try a bit too hard to be objective in some of these, but that makes for more interesting writeups, so it's all good.

I think this is a valid point. Whenever I use a scoring system, I tend to get a little carried away with it. I even wound up rescoring a bunch of these from my initial impressions. But I find it interesting to see how different it turns out to be from my personal rankings. Whatever the next project I do is, Im probably going to take a break from a scoring system for a change of pace.

Have you watched the other Attack on Titan OPs? I think they're all pretty special, with S3's (Red Swan) as my personal favorite.

I think Ive seen them all, any that have aired so far in America anyway. The one nominated by Paul is probably my favorite, but I really like the song on Red Swan too.

I dont have the ability to play audio at the moment, but Ill check out those intros you posted later.

I like this idea in theory. But the intros to so many movies are basically just credits, and theres rarely much attempt to do something thematically interesting like with TV intros.

But if it was limited to the very opening scene before credits, that could be interesting.

Yeah, I get that. I think I was projecting something Id find interesting if I was the one ranking. What do you feel like ranking next? Youll have to let everyone know what you decide.

Ill probably do a poll topic to see what gets the most support. But a few ideas Im considering are ranking anything 90s related, ranking music videos, or ranking movies nominated by the users.

Paranoia Agent is the only piece of media whose intro I saw and, without any other context, inspired me to go watch the show.

It's now my favorite anime of all time and possibly my favorite TV show of all time.

Excellent list, and a fun read. Looking forward to the next topic!

The intro is actually what made me want to watch the show too, before I realized it was made by the creator of Paprika, which I had really enjoyed. Im not sure Ive ever seen a TV show that messed with my mind so effectively each episode, and I mean that as high praise.

Great project, I look forward to the next one!

I'm sure you've mentioned it in the individual write-ups, but which intros had you not seen before you saw them for this project?

A surprisingly large number of them, probably around half. Out of the top 50, the ones I hadnt seen before were Castlevania, Cardcaptor, Night Walker, Jojo, Bobobo, Outcast, Cosmos, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Expanse, Dilbert, Black Sails, Death Note, Shiki, Mob Psycho, and March Comes in like a Lion.

You should a music-related project, or that all 90s ranking?

Yeah, a really fun project and great write-ups, thanks for running this!

I think what especially made this work was that each item being ranked is 2 minutes long at most, so everyone can watch them and compare with your write-ups even without any prior familiarity.

Opening to movies can be fun. Or maybe intros to video games. There's also always endings but other than anime, those are usually just credits.

Hmm, I hadnt even considered this idea, but I really like this one! The question is how to define a video game intro as it doesnt have a standard form like TV intros. But I think youre onto something with this idea.

I think you can go with both the intros that play when the game is first started or left on start screen for a while, or the very first cutscene according to the game.
