Hopefully the angry backlash will undo a lot of this stupidity, but it feels more and more like it just takes a couple of dumb asses on twitter to outweigh thousands of voices for sanity.

EDIT: As a side tangent, yet another example though of why physical media is important and an all-digital future is legit worrying for how easy it is for a few major media companies that own everything to just erase things from existence on a whim.

Certainly the latter. I wonder if people get that this sort of thing doesn't breed 'diversity' but breeds resentment instead. Resentment because the people are being punished basically arbitrarily and things are being banned without provication but all stemming from one source.

Because corporate boards don't care either way; neither is their goal. They want to make money, so they are capitalizing on political strife in order to remind people that show X exists. We should all be clear on this point; no one on any part of the political spectrum buys this kind of bullshit, and no one was asking for it, not from the left or right.

The D&D community is burning their entire house down right now, actually. Orcs and Drow are racist, therefore WotC is going to rework the game to eliminate race-based advantages and disadvantages entirely because implying there are biological differences between fantasy species isn't woke enough.

Not that the industry as a whole hasn't been going this way for a while - a lot of major game developers have been leaning into increased inclusivity and sensitivity (which is good) for at least the last five years or so, but they've been doing it in a way where they use a lot of SJW buzzwords (which is bad) and which tends to be somewhat of a thoughtcrime doubleplus ungood mentality (which is very bad... and somewhat ironic).

But that's what happens when you hire up all the unemployed liberal arts majors to write your material.

I've seen more than a few people complain that any given game doesn't have the option to be both male or female (or neither) as the reason why they won't purchase it. Times they are a' changin'.

There's nothing wrong with looking at a fantasy universe and thinking "does this have racist connotations or messages and if so why". Analysis of the themes in a work of fiction is always a good thing. But immediately jumping to that conclusion and then further jumping to action to remove the content found problematic is equally uncritical and counter productive.

Stat advantages based off race only really hurt character creation. Want to make a barbarian, half orc or dwarf, those are the only good choices. Wanna be a elf? Ranger or mage.

This opens the role playing aspect up more without feeling like you aren't as strong as you could have been.

Maybe its because DnD is more different from Shadowrun. But you could techincally make anything in Shadowrun. Especially since you can level up stats with EXP. So, you can really make anything you want. I do understand opening it up a bit more. But it still feels like choosing a race is pointless. And honestly, it feels more racist since you are basically choosing a character for how they look. Like choosing them based on the color of their skin... In a sense...

I feel like most RPGs are moving in this direction. In video games for example, a lot of race advantages have been removed or downplayed to the point of non existence. It's not really something I take issue with personally.

Something that always bothered me a little bit about stuff like that is the idea that these things trace back to Lord of the Rings when they really don't, kind of? Modern fantasy orcs have almost nothing in common with LotR orcs. Elf and Dwarf stereotypes are either based on Legolas and Gimli specifically (and not their race as a whole) or were made up afterwards.

A ton, actually. To sound super old, "In my DAY" 2nd edition clerics could only use blunt weapons and mages couldn't wear armor heavier than robes. Apparently clerics can use swords and shit now. THAC0 used to be the lower # the better, now it's the opposite (even though this makes sense from a total newcomer's standpoint).
