I'm guessing it's like an older Scary Movie type parody but instead of taking tropes from a buncha horror movies, it straight parodies a single series. Did people really like it when it came out?

Yeah. You see unlike most other directors of parody movies, Mel Brooks was actually good.

Nah I'm watching it for the first time right now. I'm not comparing them because quality, I just mean the comparison of Scary Move to...scary movies as is Spaceballs to Star Wars.

He didn't have anything to do with Monty Python I don't think. He did make Blazing saddles though, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceballs#Critical_reception
The film has received mixed reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reports that, as of 2020, 56% of critics have given positive reviews based on 41 reviews with an average rating of 6.39/10. The site's consensus reads; "There's fine spoofery and amusing characters in Spaceballs, though it's a far cry from Mel Brooks' peak era."[16] At another review aggregator, Metacritic, which assigns a rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 46%, based on 14 reviews.[17] Many critics agreed that, while it was funny, doing a Star Wars parody ten years after the original film had been released seemed pointless. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 2.5 stars out of 4, and remarked "I enjoyed a lot of the movie, but I kept thinking I was at a revivalit should have been made several years ago, before our appetite for Star Wars satires had been completely exhausted."[18]
The film won Worst Picture at the 1987 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.[19]
