I'm guessing it's like an older Scary Movie type parody but instead of taking tropes from a buncha horror movies, it straight parodies a single series. Did people really like it when it came out?

Yeah. You see unlike most other directors of parody movies, Mel Brooks was actually good.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceballs#Critical_reception
The film has received mixed reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reports that, as of 2020, 56% of critics have given positive reviews based on 41 reviews with an average rating of 6.39/10. The site's consensus reads; "There's fine spoofery and amusing characters in Spaceballs, though it's a far cry from Mel Brooks' peak era."[16] At another review aggregator, Metacritic, which assigns a rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 46%, based on 14 reviews.[17] Many critics agreed that, while it was funny, doing a Star Wars parody ten years after the original film had been released seemed pointless. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 2.5 stars out of 4, and remarked "I enjoyed a lot of the movie, but I kept thinking I was at a revivalit should have been made several years ago, before our appetite for Star Wars satires had been completely exhausted."[18] --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz.
