"I Dalton Barnhart vow to bring my fathers m15 to school and kill 7 people at a minimum" was what he said to his friends

and his mom actually tried arguing that they have no right to arrest him because she "knows" he wouldn't do that. lmfao

I just... feel bad for everyone involved.

The cops are right for taking him in. There are too many incidents where this type of scenario has led to a tragedy, so it cannot be taken in jest. At the same time, the kid is 15. There is a very real chance that he was fucking around, and didnt know the consequences that would be involved. Does he deserve a felony on his record for the rest of his life over that? Im not saying its right or wrong... just that I dont think theres an easy answer. And if anything, hes at least probably perturbed in some way. He likely needs help, to some degree. And I feel bad for the mom. Shes obviously desperate and heartbroken over whats happening.

Just a sad situation.

What happened to him?

To be fair, this is really what defund the police is all about. Because I question if this was really a job for the cops or if anything was served by locking this kid in juvenile detention for a week. Wouldnt it have been better for a social worker to come out and analyze the situation before hauling this kid off?
I have no idea

You're thinking about this harder than I am

Announcing it like this seems more like a cry for help. I feel like you would just do it if you really wanted your illness to take over and make you go through with it. I could see this as someone getting to the point they know they can't be trusted and trying to get someone else to force what needs to be done to be done. Which is, getting this kid away from society for a little bit and figuring out the deeper problem. Obviously his mom is a problem if her first reaction is that her son shouldn't be held accountable for his terrifying threats to a large group of kids. The type of parent that convinces herself everything is fine, just so she doesn't have to face the reality until it's too late and everyone else pays for it.

In fairness, we dont know their story. Maybe this is the first that the mom has heard of it... when the cops are literally at her door and taking we son away in handcuffs. I think most moms would try to defend their children instead of saying Well, you did that, so now you gotta pay the price. Is she wrong? Yes. But she has an emotional and personal interest at stake. Id say her reactions were out of fear and love, not solely ignorance.

That said, maybe the writing was on the wall, she was aware of it, and she ignored it. We just dont know.

Im not yet convinced that anyone was terrified by this. He didnt post anything to the school Facebook page. All the reports makes it seem like he was shitposting on gamefaqs. And clearly that warranted an investigation, but Im not sure it warranted immediately taking this kid into custody and throwing him in juvie.

You're right. We rarely ever get to know that part. Which is the frustrating part about news. The options are usually having an opinion without all the proper and important information or just constantly having to overexpress to an annoying degree that shit is deeper than what you see. Honestly, I tend to just speak driven by whatever my current mood is and don't really solidify any of my feelings. I got tired of side barring to over explain every theory or 1st impression I have. No one else does. The real difference to me is in the fact I won't act like my word is anything more than that. I also respect when people press me about it, like you just did. Always a good time for self reevaluation.

The felony on his record is my biggest concern. Im not entirely sure how it works, since hed be tried as a minor, but to have something like that on your record for the rest of your life (which has major consequences) for something you did at age 15, which may or may not have been nothing but empty words... I dont know.

Typically those records are sealed when you turn 18, but its shocking how often they find themselves unsealed and brought up again.

I guess I did say "Obviously" when I talked about his mom being a problem. I guess that was my bad. I started off good by saying "seems" and "I feel", but I kind of progressively became more sure of myself it looks like. I'll look into that.

Im just in a constant state of self evaluation. Don't worry, Im completely desensitized to self evaluation lol. It comes with no deep feeling. Once you self evaluate that your self evaluations can be wrong, everything kind of just becomes interesting to pick at. I'm comfortable with never knowing when I'm in the right or wrong.

But yeah, the most important thing is that something that could of went absolutely horrible was stopped in it's early stages. When you don't know that even saying that as a joke is reason for some type of concern, you took a wrong turn mentally and could benefit off intervention. Hopefully he gets the help needed and hopefully I was wrong about my first impression on the mom.
