But the real culprit here is soap.

https://www.healthline.com/health/beauty-skin-care/is-soap-bad-for-skin

I only use shampoo, soap just covers you with that nasty flaky stuff. But if I don't use the shampoo I'll feel gross and get dandruff, so shampoo can't be all that bad.

Do people here actually smell if they don't use soap? I can't notice any difference.

But doesnt soap kill the built up bacteria? Like, if youre just using water and nothing else, are you even cleaning your skin?

Thatd be less often for me, cuz I shower multiple times a week. I get itchy if I dont shower regularly.

I've never had any kind of rash or infection as a result. As long as I make sure the water hits every part.

When I was young (and stopped using soap), I noticed I would get rashes in my pits because the water wasn't hitting them, but since then I just make sure I get a good rinse. The soap basically gave me a reason previously to rinse everywhere.

And no, I don't smell. I'm too thin to really smell bad other than BO from forgotten deodorant.

The hand soap doesn't really do anything, pretty much every study that comes out says the same thing, that it sucks and is bad for your skin and just coats you with scum. It's a mental thing with people, it makes them feel cleaner, but it doesn't do anything.

How useful is soap in the shower anyways?

I mean, I know soap is great for breaking down oils so it's a good component for cleaning the hands and face... but the rest of the body doesn't really have a lot of oils on it, either natural ones or dirt.

I think it takes about a month for your body to adjust to not using shampoo. Basically, using shampoo causes us to over produce oils. No idea what the grease level is like after a month, but that's what I read before about people transitioning away from using shampoo.

I recommend it for men.

The point wasn't that shampoo is enough, it's that scrubbing is what cleans. If fragrant soap is the only thing masking a wretched smell from down under you should see a doctor.

Soap isn't inherently antibacterial. That's not to say regular soap doesn't help but its effect is a little overstated, the scrubbing is what helps dislodge and water does the removal. How many body wash commercials or bottles talk about its effect on bacteria? Damn near none.

Then there's the complacency that comes with soap. When people use soap they often think that's all it takes, that it does the job for them. That's why people will wash their hands for less than 10 seconds and call it good enough, while actual hand wash instructions say to spend 30 seconds scrubbing. Lots of people just lather up and rinse off without doing a good scrubbing, and then there's those that don't wash their ass or feet because they think the trickling soap is enough...

When I say scrub I really mean scrub, it's just not running your hands or even a washcloth over your body. I use a hard bristle shower brush and really go at it to get the dead skin and dirt off, and bacteria should be going with that. It hurts but the hurt means it's working! That's a joke, jeez.

To be clear I'm not antisoap and I still use soap to wash my hands throughout the day. Our hands are in contact with a lot more than our bodies and they visit orifices that require cleanliness. And to be more clear I shower daily, I'm not on board with this once a week thing.

Then you have hard water. Calcium in the water reacts with sodium stearate in the soap, forming calcium stearate, a white, waxy powder which is insoluble in water.

I use /r/curlygirl method and co-wash ("shampoo" with conditioner, not shampoo, specifically a kind of thinner cheaper conditioner since you use a lot). Don't even need shampoo! (but to start you need to use a clarifying shampoo to get all the silicons out of your hair and make sure you don't use any product that has that or other things in it, since that won't be washed out with conditioner).

edit: I use soap on my body tho never heard of people being against that

Yeah girls with curly hair seem to have quite the regime. My sister only washes her hair once a week I think and she has this special little cap she wears to sleep that helps with something. I don't understand it, but her hair is gorgeous and super tight natural curls.

Also, got to love how easy it is for everyone to spot us when we run together because she's just got this mop of curls bouncing around on top of her head.

I've been showering only twice a week since March (basically since I started working from home), and I can honestly say... that article is full of crap.

Showering less has not made me feel cleaner, I just stopped caring about how clean I was. I still have plenty of BO (I can actually smell it on myself) and my body is a sweaty, nasty mess most of the time. I only shower when my privates start chafing or I need to go out in public. I can honestly say that when I go back to working in an office, I will start showering daily again.
