I have an employee that lies a lot. Weve been working through this issue and shes actually doing better. But she tells me that its hard for her and when she does tell the truth she gets anxiety. She says because its not the norm for her, and her body is rejecting the truth.

Anyone seen or heard anything like this before?
Anything I can do to make it better?

I reward her for telling the truth but its taxing sometimes. Like I have to thank someone for doing something that should just come natural.

Any idea what kind of issue she has?

I can see that lying can be a psychological defence mechanism -- e.g. the truth makes you feel too open and exposed, as if you're giving away secrets that you'd rather not tell because it's like giving away a part of yourself. But anxiety attacks? I don't know.

That's what I would guess.
I notice a lot of liars think very much of themselves, even if they don't seem too confident overall. They're like holding onto their little bit of ego and seem extremely reliant on people enabling them.
Basically, quite awful people who need to grow up.
I'm gonna guess this person probably tries to take short cuts and only really tries when they're noticed.

These people seem to be more and more common. Idk if it's social media or just where we're headed or what. It's just so irresponsible

She sounds like a good liar.
I work with a dumb liar. I can't tell if she's really stupid or lying most of the time. Can't trust her one bit cause she's dumb and lazy and lies about it.
Basically, we just gotta babysit her cause management doesn't do anything about it. You never know if she'll be messing something up cause she's dumb, messing something up cause she's lazy or trying to cover up something she messed up with a lie. It's exhausting.
She claims she gets embarassed and that's why she lies. It shows she puts no effort into improving herself though, just her own image.

Best of luck my dude. Hopefully life corrects the balance for everyone.

idk makes sense to me. at least she's aware of it and verbalizing it. I mean, even people that don't lie will get anxiety when trying to be assertive, aka telling the truth to someone.

Maybe her lying was a defense mechanism as a kid to prevent her ass getting beat or something.

I've known of it but don't know anyone like this as I tend to not be around people who lie all the time.

Tell her to seek help. CBT could possibly help here and/or medication. Stuff like writing down the truth rather than saying out loud might also help. Support for anxiety or mental health in general is very limited and a employer trying to be a psychiatrist certainly won't change that. The only people that can help is the professionals and even then it might not help her.

You're literally said she has anxiety issues. I'm sure her priority though is to please you so she'll just flick the switch and turn it off because it's a inconvenience to you. A lot of things should come natural however we all have our issues.

This is actually my thought. But Id hate to jump to conclusions if Im wrong. But I also dont want to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who might very well be playing me.

im not saying shit can the girl or anything, assuming she is capable of doing her job at least, but i would be hesitant to believe a goddamn word she said.

my strategy dealing with these sorts of people is to just stare at them in silence when they lie to me. give them that "this is obviously bullshit look" but dont say anything. don't respond to the lies at all, and just wait until they realize youre not having it.
