Hold up, I thought erasing history was wrong? What happened to keeping statues of racists up because it's our history? Celebrating racists by having monuments in parks is fine but teaching the history of our country in school is wrong?

If you don't want to learn white history, then don't live in a historically white country. Move to Africa or Asia. I doubt there's a lot of white history in schools there.

I don't know, South Africa problem has a *lot* of white history they review.
In any case I believe you missed the point of the post you quoted

Oh he got the point, he just doesnt like the fact that American history isnt just white history
What more do they need to mention other than slavery and the civil rights movement? I don't know what they teach in American history class but over here, it's always been a pretty broad-strokes approach. From what I remember from history class, it went Greeks/Romans -> Dark Ages -> Renaissance -> Golden Age -> American Revolution -> French Revolution -> Napoleon -> Colonization -> World War 1 -> World War 2 -> Cold War.

Black history doesn't begin and end with those.

Coming from a former American history teacher, the issue is that those topics you mentioned aren't solely about white men. And that's what the textbooks focus on almost exclusively.

The foundation and creation of America wasn't just white men. Our whole thing is that we were a culmination of people from all over the world. American history isn't "white history". It's only white history when it's only taught from white perspectives.

Black people were involved in all of American history, not just slavery and the Civil Rights movement. Fucking obviously.
Okay, but during which major historical events did they play such a major role that you think it warrants special mention in history class? Because outside of slavery, the Civil War and the civil rights movement, I'm drawing a blank.

Damn near every major event in this country's history from the American Revolution to present day. The fact that most people don't know who Robert Smalls was is not surprising.

People should be way more critical of black history month, because every year I was taught that George Washington Carver invented peanut butter, but I never learned about the Tulsa race riots until this year when those events were featured on the Watchmen.

A comic book tv show taught me better black history than all of my education.

So maybe black history month needs to be better executed.

Or stop making it a month, which makes it easier to ignore. Just incorporate it all throughout teachings of American history.

You're far from alone in this regard. Weather the people attacking you admit it or not. Our history Classes have been failing us for generations now and are in need of a complete overhaul.

That and separating our history by race in my opinion was a terrible decision.

The problem (if I'm following Pokemon correctly) is that some people don't want to teach it throughout history unless the event was something black people were solely responsible for

Guys, I'm not American. The only American history I was taught in school was the American Revolution and the Civil War. Don't expect me to know every tidbit of American history. It's not relevant for me. Just like how I'm not expecting you to know anything about, say, the Seventeen Provinces and the Eighty Years' War, or who William the Silent was.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

These topics seem more relevant for History Channel documentaries than actual history class. Again, I don't know how American history classes operate, but over here, it was divided into blocks covering historical periods that really didn't go into much detail. Like for World War 2, we were taught what led up to the war, how it started, the general flow of the war, some major battles, and the big names involved like Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, Eisenhower etc. We definitely didn't go into specific batallions because there wasn't enough time and it wasn't that relevant in the larger scheme of things. And as for George Washington Carver, inventors generally weren't covered in my history classes unless their inventions were heavily tied into the specific historical period. For instance, I definitely recall the inventor of the guillotine being mentioned during classes about the French Revolution. Or the inventor of the steam engine during the Industrial Revolution.

Nah mate, I'm definitely not one of those self-loathing white SJW's. Besides, I'm not even American, so why should I feel guilty for how Americans treated black people over the years? Sucks for them but that has nothing to do with me.

He definitely should be brought up if they ever go into WW2 medical developments, but that's not an aspect of the war that history classes tend to focus on from my personal experience. I don't know if medical school also has some kind of history course, but surely he must be mentioned there.

So are you complaining about black history being included in *your* world history sections on US history? Or complaining that it is included in US history classes taught in the US?

It doesn't have to be a history class. It could just be about black issues in general.

History is just the collective record of human events and doesn't have to be filled with great moments. Narratives like how blacks built up wealth mid century and then had it systematically taken away arent tied to emancipation narratives but are still relevant

Ok see that's a bit different than complaints from US citizens about having a black history month. I take it you are asking from the point of view of someone outside the US taking a semester long US history class?
