Let's try again: Bob-omb Battlefield is likely a reference to SM64's main theme. SM64's main theme is likely a reference to Donkey Kong. Bob-omb Battlefield in no way has to have anything directly to do with Donkey Kong which is the coincidence you were objecting to before. This scenario is extremely plausible
And I'll just say what I said again but differently: What is "SM64's main theme?" Do you know that Bob-omb Battlefield references the motif of SM64's opening, and not the other way around? How can you be certain of what process Koji Kondo used?

It is entirely possible that he didn't intend to use DK's theme as the main theme for SM64.
It is entirely possible he started writing and figured out what he was doing later.

It is much much more likely it was intentional.

What I said was douchey and I apologize.

Apology accepted, I apologize for yelling at you too and escalating, I didn't need to.

I agree that the usage of the DK melody is a strong possibility and that it has thematic strength. I just have a lot more uncertainty about the obviousness of that being Kondo's process - it isn't that difficult to end up with something that sounds like the 25M theme.

I'm actually in the process right now of trying to comb through interviews with Koji Kondo to see if they offer any insight but I haven't come up with too much that really pertains to this yet.

I want to quote NFUN's post but it won't let me lol

I feel like we're talking past each other - I accept that DK -> "SM64 main theme" -> BBB doesn't mean that BBB was written directly off of DK, but it would mean that BBB was written with that motif ultimately in mind, and I just - I don't know, I'd have to think about other examples of that kind of two-step reference happening. A one-time quoting of DK in the context I was talking about is one thing, but the idea of half of SM64's soundtrack being ultimately built on that motif just feels a little strange to me. It might very well be, it's just kind of unusual!

I think, given the way the theme is postulated in the intro, that even if it wasn't intended, it was recognized at some point.

I've been playing around a bit with some of the music from SM64, and this theme shows up in a LOT of different music, but Shifting Sand Land's melody starts out the same as Luke and Leia's. (I want to say Bernstein has the same melody in Candide).

Here's fully extrapolated. Haven't figured out if Lethal Lava or Big Boo's Haunt fits yet. Didn't look at Bowser stuff. Perhaps most compelling is that Cool Cool Mountain is the most identical.
