I found the last 100 or so games in teh genre were kinda poopy.... aside from Don't Starve

i wouldn't really buy it without friends to play it with if you're on the fence about the genre though, it really doesn't do anything particularly new (except, i guess, you have to pay attention to structural support when building, because too much load makes the house crumble)

Personally I think everyone gives it far too much praise. Its solid and it has a lot of room to build on the game, but it's just not there yet.

Once you get past building your house and getting set up with basic amenities, there's really not much else. And it's very repetitive.

They made some great decisions to ameliorate typical issues with those types of games, but they also made other decisions that I think make it just as frustrating if not more so.

That dice game is addicting as fuck though

It's great, next to Subnautica it's the only Survival(Does Terraria count?) game I'm super into, although there's not many survival elements, it's heavily PvE focused with only an option for PvP.

It's great with friends might be tedious alone.

ya, my favourite in the genre is Haven&Hearth which has only like a dozen or so items, but the meticulous co-operation is appealing... the problem is there's a persistent PvP element (backed with a bounty/murder system) which strikes fear into any crossing

I got very into it because the base building is a lot of fun. There are also worse things you can spend $30 and 800MB download on.

Might it be better to let the game age a bit and some quality of life updates before playing it? I have been playing Space Engineers and was surprise how much QoL I took for granted that were not there at the start of the game.

My friends and I played it for almost a month straight. I'd say only lots of fun with at least 3-4 people. You'll be sinking lots of hours, period. Only kind of game in that 'genre' I've gotten into. We've been off it for a bit but I'm sure we'll spend some more time. We were almost at the 3rd boss.
